Hoosiers Post Best Single Round Team Score of the Season in Round One at Ka’anapali Classic

LAHAINA, Maui, Hawaii – In round one of the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate, the Indiana men's golf team posted a team score of 276 (-8) to tie for eighth place in the 20-team field. The score is a season-best for the Hoosiers, topping the previous best of 277 in the first round at the Windon Memorial on Oct. 8.
Senior Brendon Doyle had the round of the day for Indiana, playing his first nine holes in 6-under par before going on to finish at 5-under par for the round and tied for sixth individually. The 66 in round one also matched Doyle's career best, after he turned in a 66 at the Loyola Intercollegiate on Feb. 28, 2016.
Redshirt junior Jake Brown was keeping pace with Doyle, as he was 5-under through his first 12 holes of the day. But a pair of bogeys on the way in saw him finish at 3-under par and a tie for 20th. It is Brown's fourth round in the 60s this season after posting a total of five rounds in the 60s his first two seasons.
Sophomore Brock Ochsenreiter rolled in seven birdies in his first round on his way to a 68 and a tie for 20th alongside Brown. Like Brown, Ochsenreiter has gotten off to a hot start this fall, with today's 68 marking his second round in the 60s through 13 rounds this season after posting just two rounds in the 60s in 32 rounds last year.
Freshman Evan Yakubov logged a 74 in his opening round and Jack Sparrow was one shot behind with a 75 in round one.
As a team, IU recorded 25 birdies in the first round – 19 of those coming on the front nine of the course.
Round two will get underway at 8:30 a.m. (Hawaiian)/2:30 p.m. (Eastern) on Saturday at Ka'anapali. Fans can follow along with hole-by-hole live scoring on GolfStat.com.
