BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana volleyball alum Courtney Harnish has always been about helping others. The summer before her senior year at Indiana, Harnish traveled to rural Vietnam, where she taught math and coached volleyball for kids growing up without shoes on their feet.
Harnish is now pursuing a master's degree in school counseling and teaching a first-grade class in intercity Nashville, Tenn.
Harnish is collecting money to buy books for her class of 27 kids at East End Prep.
Harnish said she has really enjoyed the experience of teaching her class.
"I think that young children, especially elementary ages students really are so smart and so brilliant and have so much to give the world," Harnish said. If I can help them understand their feelings and help them grow, I'm doing my job."
"My favorite part has been the personal relationships and learning who they are as people," Harnish added. "A lot of people overlook six-year-olds and think there is not much to them. They have so much more, so learning about them and what they like to do and getting to know them has been a great experience and very inspiring."
Harnish said the experience teaching in intercity Nashville to underserved kids has been eye-opening.
One day she missed class and when she came back the kids were very worried about her and said they really missed her.
Harnish has made a great impact on the lives of the kids. She saw students that came in and couldn't write their own names and now they are reading at an advanced level for their age.
Harnish plans to buy and wrap books for her kids based on their reading level and interests. She said some of the girls love princesses and the boys love cars.
It is clear that Harnish has made an impact on her kids and they have made an impact on her.
"They are all so different and so smart and I really want something they can hold and be proud of," Harnish said. I want them to feel that someone took the time and cares a lot about them."
