Oliver continues solid Big Ten start
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Indiana's wrestling team completed their stretch against the best with a dual meet at No. 1 Penn State in Rec Hall on Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions (5-0, 1-0) won eight matches with bonus points to top the Hoosiers (6-3, 0-2), 44-3.
Junior Elijah Oliver (125) continued his unbeaten start against Big Ten dual meet competition with a decision over Devin Schnupp. Oliver (14-6) has a 12-6 career record against Big Ten meet opponents, and holds a +20 dual point differential this year.
After a scoreless start to the action, Oliver escaped quickly in the second and scored a late takedown to gain a 3-0 lead, breaking a tie-up in short time. The junior continued in the third period with another two drops to win by decision, 7-2.
Junior Cole Weaver (141) suffered defeat by a one-point decision to Jered Cortez, the tightest bout of the afternoon. Cortez scored first and nearly added back points on the edge of the mat, but the action pushed out of play and reset at center. From there, Weaver rolled into an escape and a quick takedown seconds later. Cortez's escape squared the bout after three minutes.
Starting down in the second period, Weaver took the lead with an escape that was short-lived, as Cortez scored a takedown with both on their feet. Weaver escaped again to tie the bout, 5-5, entering the final period.
Weaver started on top and erased Cortez's riding time point before allowing the escape, but the IU junior couldn't find another score for the win. Cortez held on for a 6-5 decision.
