WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Seniors once again paced the Indiana Women's Basketball team but couldn't pull it out in overtime, falling 82-72 to Virginia on Monday at the West Palm Invite.
Senior guard Tyra Buss tied a season-high 28 points and went 6-for-9 from the line as she set the new school record for free throws made in her career. Senior forward Amanda Cahill put in 17 points, four assists and her four rebounds pushed her into fourth place on the all-time rebounding list (925). Freshman guard Bendu Yeaney had her fourth double figure scoring game with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Indiana (6-6) combined to shoot 43.9 percent in the loss and were outrebounded 37-29 by the Hoos (6-6). Mistakes also hindered the Hoosiers, who committed 22 turnovers on the day. The game featured 16 lead changes and six ties in the overtime nail biter, including seven lead changes in the first quarter alone.
To open the game, the two teams kept the score within three until the final 1:35 of the quarter as a Buss transition layup led to a Virginia timeout as IU led 17-14. The Hoosiers would close the half on a 6-0 run to go up five 19-14. A 3-pointer from Yeaney and feed to freshman forward Linsey Marchese from freshman guard Jaelynn Penn would give what would be its largest lead of the day, 24-16. Virginia would chip away at the deficit, coming within two, 24-22, with 5:30 left on the clock. The game would remain tied until the final seconds of the quarter, as Yeaney hit another triple with 23 seconds left. But Virginia's J'Kyra Brown answered with two seconds left to give her team a 36-34 lead at the half.
Keeping it within five in the third, a take by Yeaney with 4:03 on the clock made it a tie game at 44-all but IU would send Virginia to the line where they would go 4-for-4 with under two to play. Buss's triple with 1:39 cut the lead down to one heading into the fourth, 48-47. She came out in the fourth with the first basket of the quarter and a 5-0 run helped increase the lead to four. Free throws by Penn kept the IU lead at four but another three from Brown made it 54-53. Buss completed a 3-point play with 3:51 left to go back up four, but UVA answered again from long range with a 3-pointer. Tied at 60-60, Cahill cut to the basket fed by Penn to take back the lead, but it was Brown once again from downtown with 2:22 in regulation.
Breaking the press, Buss split defenders as she took it on the left side regaining the lead. Out of a called timeout, Virginia scored with 51 seconds left but Buss would get herself to the line in the bonus where she hit 1-of-2 to force overtime tied at 65-65.
In overtime, IU would be outscored 17-7, including a 13-for-17 effort by the Hoos from the free throw line in the bonus. They would keep it within one with 2:36 to play but an 8-0 run eventually sank the Hoosiers.
