Indiana at Michigan
Opening Statement:
"That's a good win for Michigan as we get started in league play. I thought they ran their stuff well and made us work defensively and took their time. They had some really good matchups in the game that they were able to take advantage of.
"Offensively for us, it was a big breakdown for us. You can't get on the road and play the first 10 minutes of the game with four points. We didn't move the ball. We dribbled the ball way too much and you saw a lot of errors. I think we had nine turnovers at halftime and unforced poor offensive play.
"Coming into the game, I felt like we were confident and I also felt like we were getting better. On the road, sometimes things go a little bit funny and you have to be able to adjust and make some winning plays. To our guys credit, I think we got it down to a 5-point deficit in the second half and then just had one terrible run that kind of got away from us. We will learn from it. A quick turnaround with Iowa at home on Monday. That's kind of what these two games in three days is going to do – not allow you to dwell. You have to improve from today as much as you can for Iowa because that is really what is most important, focusing on the next one."
On allowing Michigan to get off to a hot start from behind the 3-point line in the game:
"They got some good looks. And they go some good looks because our offense allowed them to get out in transition. If you put Michigan in transition 70 percent of the time, you are going to give up 3's. Our offense is a big reason why our 3-point defense wasn't very good.
"I just think in general, us guarding the ball – they had us really spread. And they made the right passes. They had 16 assists to 10 turnovers, they delivered it. Their guards penetrated the ball and they made the 'one more' pass and they made it hard on us.
"It starts with offense and being able to eliminate transition opportunities. And then it comes back to half-court guarding the ball and not getting beat in one-on-one situations where you then have to commit help. Michigan is the ultimate team that preys on that spacing and they did a good job. I think they made 11 3's off 31 attempts in the game. And that's probably a good reason why we only took seven. So give them credit for winning that battle. We didn't get good looks."
How disappointing is this after how your team played against Duke?
"That's the thing thought – it's disappointing when you lose to Duke. We didn't beat Duke. I have to keep coming back to that point – we lost the game to Duke. If any of that 'hey I feel good stuff' creeps into your locker room or your bus and you go 0-for-8 on layups. You have to be a focused team and you have to be possessed with getting better. And you really have to understand the reality of winning and losing. Playing to win is everything. Performing and production. It is every day and every game. It is not feel good because we played pretty hard against Duke. We should have beat Duke, but we didn't. A good team, at home in front of that crowd with four minutes to go and a one-point lead finds a way to win that game. Then you can really feel good about it. But it didn't have anything to do with Duke."
Do you view this as a step backwards for the team?
"No. This is our first Big Ten game in December and it's our first. There are a lot of teams that play a conference game on the road on December 2 that are going to lose. The key is to really focus in on the next 48 hours because we are going to play Iowa at home and that's an important game for us. That's the most important thing we can do – learn, get better, work, be ready and have an unbelievable effort level for our Big Ten home game opportunity in December."
On Juwan Morgan's consistency so far this year:
"He was the one bright spot in the game. He was on the boards. He gave us 24 points and eight boards in 32 minutes. He had to play a lot of minutes today because of the mismatches that their front court produces with Wagner and Robinson in the game. They can really spread you out. So we knew we were going to have to play that lineup a little bit.
"He was the one guy, he really went to work. He had an advantage, size wise, in most cases. He was aggressive."
What did you feel like the biggest issues were on offense during the first 10 minutes?
"We weren't sharing the ball, too much dribbling and we didn't read the defense properly at all. And then when we did have opportunities in and around the basket we were very, very soft. We had opportunities around the rim to make layups. We had a couple easy ones early that if they go down then you keep a working margin.
"Our guards didn't make plays for others. That was the big thing. When you look at our assist total, we had seven assists with Juwan and De'Ron Davis having three and two, respectively. Then Devonte Green had three. After that, we didn't have another guard that had an assist in the game.
"If you are playing guards at this level and you are setting ball-screens and playing in transition, you have to have the ability to get somebody better. Early in the game, especially on the road, that is your thought process: move the ball, share it, work it and make somebody better. At home, I think you saw that a little bit the other night where guys were playing with great freedom and were not afraid. I think today we were a little bit tentative on the road, we over-dribbled and got stuck a few times and then they got out. And once they get out – I think they made their first four 3's – it was 12-2 right away."
