HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Indiana wrestling junior Cole Weaver (141) earned a runner-up finish in the 55th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern University at Sears Centre Arena. Weaver's second-place standing is the highest by a Hoosier at Midlands since Taylor Walsh (165), who won it all in 2014.
The ninth Midlands finalist in program history and the first at 141 lbs., Weaver lost his final match of the weekend, a 7-0 decision, to No. 9 Mason Smith (Central Michigan).
Weaver (19-5) is off to his best career start in an inspirational junior season. This weekend's finish is his third on a tournament podium this year after achieving third-place finishes at the Clarion Open (11/5) and the Navy Classic (11/18).
In total, Saturday's result is his seventh career podium finish. The runner-up standing, his first on the Midlands podium, is the highest collegiate tournament finish of his career.
Earning the third seed in a contentious 141 lbs. bracket where every entrant had the opportunity to become a first-time Midlands Champion, Weaver put his nose to the grindstone for four consecutive wins by decision in yesterday's competition. The junior compiled a 5-1 record on the weekend.
Weaver joins Devin Skatzka (174), who finished in eighth-place, as Hoosiers on the Midlands podium. Skatzka finished the weekend with a 4-3 record, earning one major decision and a technical fall.
Skatzka became the eighth wrestler in program history to earn multiple podium finishes at Midlands, the first since Nate Jackson (174 lbs. in 2014; 184 lbs. in 2016). Skatzka achieved a fifth-place finish at the 54th Midlands Championships in 2016, also at 174 lbs.
The Hoosiers achieved a 15th-place finish out of 40 teams, scoring 34.5 points on the team leaderboard.
