IU’s Lillard Named Finalist for MAC Hermann Trophy

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University men's soccer's Grant Lillard was named one of three finalists for the 2017 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy on Friday, United Soccer Coaches announced. The three finalists were determined by voting from NCAA Division I soccer coaches.
Lillard, along with Wake Forest's Jon Bakero and Stanford's Tomas Hilliard-Arce, are the three finalists for the prestigious. The MAC Hermann Trophy has been awarded annually since 1967. This year's winners will be announced on January 5, 2018 in conjunction with the 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy Banquet at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
The honor is the second in as many days for the Hinsdale, Ill. native, as Lillard earned First-Team All-America honors from United Soccer Coaches on Thursday. Lillard was named a Second-Team All-American by both Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News in 2016.
Starting all 23 matches for the Hoosiers as center back this season, Lillard has been one of the leader's of the NCAA's best defense. IU leads the nation in shutouts (17), goals allowed (6) and goals-against average (.242). He has also contributed offensively this year, totaling two goals and two assists.
Lillard was a unanimous pick as both the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year this season and First-Team All-Big Ten. The senior was also named First-Team All-Midwest Region by United Soccer Coaches.
Lillard is the first Hoosier to be named a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy since Will Bruin in 2010. Danny O'Rourke is the last Hoosier to win the MAC Hermann Trophy, taking home the award in 2004.
The MAC has honored the top player in collegiate soccer since 1986. Prior to 2002, the Missouri Athletic Club and Hermann Trophy were two separate awards.
Two IU players earned the MAC Player of the Year trophy on three occasions with Ken Snow taking the honor in 1988 and 1990, and current IU head coach Todd Yeagley in 1994. Hoosiers collected five Hermann trophies with Angelo DiBernardo in 1978, Armando Betancourt in 1981, Ken Snow in 1988 and 1990, and current IU associate head coach Brian Maisonneuve in 1994.
