TEMPE, Ariz. – Behind a one-hitter from sophomore Tara Trainer, Indiana Softball defeated Saint Mary's in Sunday's finale of the Kajikawa Classic, 2-0.
Trainer tossed a complete game, her eighth in her career, while striking out nine and allowing just three walks.
Indiana's first run of the game came in the second inning after Katie Lacefield knocked a two-out single back to Saint Mary's pitcher Eryn McCoy and then stole second. Junior Sarah Thompson's bloop single to shallow left field then brought in Lacefield from second to make it 1-0.
Senior CaraMia Tsirigos looked to add onto the advantage as she led off the fourth frame with a single up the middle and pinch runner Sydney Hester stole second to get into scoring position, but she was stranded.
In the bottom of the inning, Saint Mary's saw its leadoff batter reach first on a dropped third strike, but was caught stealing on the next pitch as catcher Bella Norton connected with second baseman Erin Lehman. After Trainer struck out the next batter, shortstop Rachel O'Malley made an impressive stop on a grounder, digging the ball out and tossing to first baseman Taylor Uden to end the inning.
The Indiana bats looked again to tack on to the lead in the top of the fifth as Norton and Gabbi Jenkins each picked up their first careers hits to put two in scoring position with no outs, but they were left on base.
For the first time in the game, Saint Mary's put multiple runners on base in the fifth following two walks. However, a running catch by centerfielder Rebecca Blitz and a pop-up to second base got Trainer out of the jam.
The first hit of the day for Saint Mary's came on a two-out single to right by Hailey Sparacino in the following inning, but she was left stranded. Trainer and the Indiana defense did not allow a single runner to advance past second base in the game.
Indiana added a security run in the seventh on an RBI double by Norton to left field, scoring senior Kayla Mathewson, who had reached on a leadoff single.
The Hoosiers (2-3) return to action on Thursday as they travel to Austin, Texas for a tournament hosted by the University of Texas. The first game of the event will pit the Hoosiers against the Longhorns at 7 p.m. ET.
