BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana sophomore Madison Appel and senior Kim Schmider coming off a win on Saturday over the No. 32 ranked doubles team, beat the No. 1 doubles team on Sunday against Kentucky.
Despite winning three first sets in singles, the Hoosiers were unable to win the match as they fell 4-0 against No. 25 Kentucky.
Appel and Schmider, who are unranked, beat No. 1 Aldila Sutjiadi/Mami Adachi from Kentucky 6-4.
"I'm really proud of the way Madison and Kim competed today," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "They knew they had a great opportunity today and they took advantage of it and approached it really well. I think they understand each other very well and that has helped them be successful."
"We were looking forward to the opportunity to play against such a good team," Schmider said. "We worked on being more aggressive in practice this week. We knew we had nothing to lose and knew we needed to stay aggressive and it was great to see our hard work pay off today."
Kentucky won No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to earn the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Although Kentucky put three more points on the board with wins on courts five, six and three, in the remaining three matches that did not finish, the Hoosiers won the first set in each.
"I like the way we competed this weekend," Azcui said. "We are playing better and gaining confidence each week and I think we are close to making some breakthroughs."
Up next the Hoosiers host DePaul and IUPUI at home on Saturday Feb. 25. The first match, against DePaul will start at 11:00 a.m. and the second, against IUPUI will be played at 4:00 p.m.
