Indiana Postgame Quotes
Feb. 21, 2017
Indiana 90, Iowa 96 (OT)
Indiana head coach Tom Crean
"This was our 12th game this season where the margin was 3-points or less with less than a minute to go. It's disheartening that we play as hard as we play – we make our mistakes, as do other teams – to no have it go our way. They are working their tails off in preparation and in practice. I thought we were fresh and energetic.
"We attacked better in the second half. I didn't like in the first half that we really got away from what we practiced, in the sense of keeping the game always on the attack. So when they went to the zone, we got a little stagnant. That's not the idea. The idea is not to be on the wing, the idea is to be in the corner; play through the high post and reverse it. We felt that the middle was a great place to attack, but it was too easy to cover us there at times in the first half because we didn't get down into the corner. We just got stagnant. But we corrected a lot of that."
On the turnovers:
"There are times where we get away from the fundamental base with post feeding or driving it baseline while the post is loaded. It's not how we practice. But what I have to look back at is, at the end, we were right there to win the game. It goes to overtime and we don't win it, despite the mistakes that are made. But if you look at the stat sheet, I don't know how we were in the game, to be honest. But we were, so I have to watch the film and take it from there."
James Blackmon Jr.
On going to overtime:
"We felt comfortable going into overtime. We have won it there before. So I felt like we made some key plays down the stretch to get us the extra five minutes, but we just came up short."
On the turnovers in overtime:
"They were fundamental turnovers. We have to tighten up on that. We have to watch the film and it just can't keep happening."
On the difference between winning and losing these close games:
"Tonight it was the turnovers. They took better care of the ball than us down the stretch and that's what it came down to."
Robert Johnson
On the difference between winning and losing these close games:
"Yeah, I think the turnovers were one of the details that hurt us down the stretch. We talked about being more aware in certain situations, and that includes turnovers, rebounding and know time-score as it relates to what type of shot you want to get. All of those details."
On getting off to a fast start and then trying to hold that lead:
"Basketball is a game of runs. We made a run early, but any good team is going to come out and respond and that's what they did. We tried to weather the storm, and at the end of the game, I thought we did a good job of doing that. We just fell a little short."
