BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Track and Field team will head east to compete in the Big Ten Championships on Friday and Saturday. The meet will be held at the SPIRE Institute for the fifth consecutive season.
Daniel Kuhn will look to defend his conference title in the 600m run. A season ago, the sophomore established the school record with a winning time of 1:16.02 in the finals of the event. This season he has lowered the record to 1:15.88. Kuhn also holds the nation's quickest 800m time at 1:46.42.
Katherine Receveur has had a tremendous breakout season this year. The cross country All-American has shattered two individual records this season. In the opening meet of the season she took down the 5,000m school record that had stood for nearly 27 years. Her time of 15:50.30 topped Michelle Dekkers by almost seven seconds. At the Meyo Invitational, she eclipsed another record held by Dekkers, running a 9:03.71 in the 3,000m.
Sophomore thrower Willie Morrison holds the school record in the shot put. He wasted little time breaking the record this season, doing so on his second throw of the first meet with a mark of 19.47m (63-10.5). David Schall earned his first meet victory in the shot put at the Hoosier Hills Invitational. The sophomore won with a put of 18.80m (61-8.25), the fourth best mark in school history.
Nakel McClinton is a reigning Big Ten point-scorer in the weight throw. The senior also holds the school record in the event with a throw of 20.96m (68-9.25). McClinton will look to improve upon her third place finish at the championships a year ago. Andrew Miller has been dynamic in the weight throw this season. Miller has established the school record multiple times this season, and it currently stands at 21.22m (69-7.25).
Eric Bethea landed on the podium last year at the Big Ten Championships in the triple jump. This year he comes in with the best seed mark, a jump of 16.34m (53-7.5). The jump ties him for fifth in the country and is also the fifth best leap in school history.
Brenna Calder ranks fourth in school history in the mile run. She turned in a time of 4:38.88 at the Meyo Invitational earlier in February. Jordan Huntoon holds the ninth quickest time in the 800m run in school history with a time of 1:49.67.
Megan Grabowski has established herself as the top Hoosier sprinter this season. In her freshman campaign she has climbed into the top 10 in the school's record book in two events. She ranks fifth in the 60m dash with a time of 7.51 and tied for 10th in the 200m dash with a time of 24.66.
The IU distance medley relay (DMR) teams have been sensational this season. Last weekend, at the Alex Wilson Invitational, the women's team ran the 12th fastest collegiate time in the history of the event. The team featured Calder, Taylor Williams, Olivia Hippensteel and Receveur. They won the meet with a blistering time of 10:55.94, the Big Ten Conference record and the second fastest time in the NCAA this season. The men's team followed suit, winning the meet with a nation-leading time of 9:28.14. The mark posted by Joe Murphy, Markevious Roach, Kuhn and Kyle Mau is good for the second fastest DMR time in school history.
The Big Ten Network has confirmed that both days of the championships will have live streaming coverage. On Friday, coverage will start at 5:30 p.m. with the women's shot put. On Saturday, coverage will begin at noon, with a recap of the earlier events, and continue throughout the competition until the champions are crowned.
