BOCA RATON, Fla. – Three home runs propelled Indiana baseball (3-2) to an 8-4 win over the Florida Atlantic Owls on Friday evening.
Sophomore Ryan Fineman and seniors Craig Dedelow and Austin Cangelosi all went yard for the Hoosiers, with Fineman and Dedelow each driving in two runs apiece. Freshman Jeremy Houston collected two hits, including a triple, while Laren Eustace and Luke Miller each drove in a run. Fineman had a two-hit night at the plate while freshman Jake Matheny also drove in a run.
Sophomore Jonathan Stiever struck out seven batters in six innings, both career highs for the righty, en route to his first win of the season.
Two-out hitting resulted in two first inning runs for the Hoosiers. Fineman singled to right-center field to score Eustace, who led off the game with a free pass from catcher's interference. Matheny then scored Miller, who walked, with a two-out RBI single to left field. The Owls brought the game back within one in the bottom of the first with a solo home run.
Dedelow's second home run of the young season came in the third inning and also scored Miller, who walked on four-straight pitches to lead off the inning, while Fineman went deep for the first time this season to extend the Hoosiers' lead to 5-1 in the fifth.
Following a two-out double in the home half of the fifth, Stiever shut down David Miranda with a full count strikeout.
Indiana continued to take advantage of the deep ball in the sixth inning, as Cangelosi led off with a solo shot to right field, as part of a two-run frame. A walk to Tony Butler and a single by Houston, in addition to a sacrifice bunt by Eustace, helped Miller's misplayed ball score Butler to make it a 7-1 game. An Owls' home run in the bottom half made it a 7-2 game.
A one-out triple by Houston translated to the Hoosiers' eighth run in the eighth inning after Eustace's single down the right field line drove him in.
Florida Atlantic put two runs up in the ninth with a two-run home run by Tyler Frank.
Indiana and Florida Atlantic continue its series tomorrow with a first pitch time scheduled for 4 p.m.
