BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Capped by a no-hitter from freshman Emily Goodin against UAB, Indiana Softball swept the first day of the Samford/UAB Tournament, collecting a pair of victories. The Hoosiers defeated Iowa State, 4-1, before the nightcap shutout against the Blazers, 7-0.
Goodin's no-hitter was the first for Indiana since current sophomore Tara Trainer tossed one against Evansville on March 12, 2016.
Indiana 4, Iowa State 1
A four-run first inning would prove to be enough as the Hoosiers defeated Iowa State in the first game of the day, 4-1. The IU victory ended a five-game winning streak for the Cyclones.
Indiana jumped to its 4-0 lead in the opening frame on a pair of RBI doubles and two Iowa State errors. After Birmingham native Rebecca Blitz drew a leadoff walk, the Hoosiers put runners on the corners as senior Erin Lehman reached on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Lehman stole second to set the stage for junior Taylor Uden, who doubled down the right field line to give Indiana a 2-0 lead. A fielding error on junior Rachel O'Malley's grounder to short plated Uden. Junior Aimilia McDonough's third hit of the season was a double to center, scoring freshman Bella Norton.
Tara Trainer retired the first six batters faced until a walk to Kaylee Bosworth to lead off the third. Another walk to Cathlin Binghman and a groundout put runners on second and third, but one of Trainer's nine strikeouts against the Cyclones ended the inning.
Iowa State's first hit of the day came on a long single by Kelsey McFarland to start the fourth inning. After stealing second, McFarland scored on a double by Talyn Lewis to cut the Indiana lead to 4-1.
After the IU offensive explosion in the first frame, Iowa State put in reliever Savannah Sanders, who retired 14 of the 15 batters she faced with the lone exemption being a walk to O'Malley in the third.
The Cyclones once again threatened in the fifth, as a pair of singles put two on with one away. However, a groundout to third baseman Katie Lacefield and Trainer's seventh strikeout of the game stopped the threat, as Iowa State would get no closer.
Trainer collected her second win of the season, as she tossed her fourth complete game of 2017, allowing just four hits.
Indiana 7, UAB 0
Goodin retired all but two batters she faced in the no-hitter, with the only Blazers to reach base coming via a walk and fielding error. She picked up five strikeouts in the win, which was also the first complete game of her young career.
On the offensive end, Indiana was guided by a pair of homers from senior CaraMia Tsirigos and sophomore Nicole Lawvere as the Hoosiers tied their season high in runs.
For the second time on Friday, Blitz reached base to lead off the game, this time on a UAB fielding error at shortstop. A stolen bag and groundout by Lehman moved her to third before Tsirigos' long sacrifice fly to right gave the Hoosiers an early 1-0 lead.
The Hoosiers added on to their lead in the second as a bases-loaded walk to freshman Katie Lacefield plated O'Malley, who was hit by a pitch to get aboard.
UAB's first baserunner of the game came on a walk to Amy Waters, but she was left stranded.
After doubling in the first game, McDonough did it again against UAB, leading off the fourth inning with a knock to right center. A wild pitch pushed McDonough to third before a walk and stolen base by Mathewson put runners on second and third with no outs. Junior Shayna Gamm then doubled Indiana's lead as she scored both runners on a single to left.
Lawvere, stepping in to pinch-hit in the sixth, extended the Hoosier advantage to 6-0 on a two-run homer to left, bringing in McDonough. The homer was the second of the year for the team and the first of Lawvere's career.
Tsirigos made it 7-0 on her second home run of the season, a solo shot to left.
The Blazers got a runner on with one away in the seventh on a fielding error at first, put a popup and strike out secured the no-no.
Indiana returns to action on Saturday as the Hoosiers face Samford at 2 p.m. ET. The game will be played at UAB's Mary Bowers Field. A live radio broadcast of the contest will be available on IUHoosiers.com
