BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Big Ten Conference announced the award winners following the 2017 Indoor Big Ten Championships. Three Hoosiers earned special recognition from the conference.
Head coach Ron Helmer was selected as Big Ten Coach of the Year, winning in unanimous fashion. This is Helmer's second time taking home the honor, his first since 2012. Helmer led the men's team to a team championship at the conference meet this year. The team posted 112 points, which was 28 points higher than second place Penn State.
Treyton Harris was selected as Field Athlete of the Championships. The sophomore won the long jump with a career best leap of 7.71m (25-3.5). He came into the weekend seeded eighth in the long jump, but hit personal best marks three times within the meet to earn the win. He followed up that 10-point effort with a runner-up finish in the high jump. Harris had not cleared seven feet in the event prior to the weekend. On Saturday he did not miss a jump until 2.17m (7-1.5). He would go onto clear that height to secure second place. Harris ended the weekend with 18 points towards Indiana's winning point total. The last Hoosier to earn Big Ten Athlete of the Championships was Derek Drouin in 2013.
"Treyton had a break out meet like most athletes never experience," said coach Helmer. "Big personal records in two different events resulted in 18 team points which accounted in large part for the positive momentum our team experienced in the early stages of the championship meet. He has announced his arrival to Big Ten championship levels in a big way. I could not be more proud of him."
Senior hurdler Adrian Mable was named the IU representative for the Sportsmanship Award on the men's side. Senior middle distance runner Olivia Hippensteel was named the women's honoree for Indiana. They are now candidates for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student from each institution at the end of the school year.
The Hoosiers will be back on the track for the NCAA Championships on March 10th and 11th.
