Postgame Quotes
Feb. 28, 2017
Indiana head coach Tom Crean
Where did you feel like the game got away?
"We out-scored them in the paint. We didn't shoot a free throw until the 11:00 mark of the second half. We got outscored 15 points at the foul line with a plan to go inside. I would say that's always going to be a factor when you are not getting a chance to match that.
"We made our comeback. With as good as Swanigan is, along with the rest of them, Mathias is the key to their team in my opinion. We did a great job against him at our place. That's some of the video that we lead off with is how good Mathias is moving without the ball. He got hot and we lost him a couple times. I think that hurt us.
"So to answer your question, in the first half Mathias got hot. The points off turnovers were negative for us, but it came back in the second half. But we could never get anywhere close to matching what was happening at the foul line."
On how the turnovers effected the game, with 11 in the first half:
"Well, we made a comeback. What's done is done. If you check the stats at halftime, we were down eight points, so it wasn't insurmountable."
What do you like or dislike about your team and how they are sticking with things?
"I love their fight and I love their resolve. I mean every day in practice, you would not be able to tell that we had so many tough losses. They have tremendous resiliency, which is going to carry them a long, long way in life if they never lose that. We haven't had as many wins out of it, with having 13 games that have been within 3 points with a minute left. They are working very hard to overcome things. Obviously, the foul trouble did hurt us – I'm not saying we didn't foul. I used to think I could understand points in the paint, but I have no idea what points in the paint mean any more. I don't know how it reflects what you do or don't do at the foul line.
"I love the fact that they care. They are working extremely hard and we have some guys that are getting a lot better. And they want to learn. Those are all the qualities that you really want in somebody. I can't tell you how bad it hurts as a leader of them and as a human being, for them to not get the results a lot of times for the work they put in. It hurts everybody, but it hurts us for the players because they work so hard."
