BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer junior Annelie Leitner has been selected to participate in the 2017 Cyprus Women's Cup for the Austrian National Team. Competition for the 12-team event begins on March 1 and will conclude March 8.
"This is an incredible opportunity for Annelie to compete at a high level while representing her country and Indiana University," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "She will get to play with some of the best international players at the Cyprus Cup and we are so excited to cheer her on."
The Salzburg, Austria native has competed with the Austrian U-19 and U-17 squads, but this is Leitner's first stint with the full national team.
As a member of the U-17 National Team, Leitner scored three goals in eight games. Most recently, she competed in the 2015 European Qualifiers with the U-19s, scoring a pair of goals in two games.
"It's an honor. I have no words to describe what it means to be playing for my country," said Leitner. "I'm excited to play with those that I looked up to when I was with the U-17s and U-19s."
With the Hoosiers, Leitner has netted three goals and played in 38 games, while making 22 starts. In 2016, she scored in Indiana's 1-1 draw with Louisville to open the season before suffering a year-ending injury.
The event, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, features three games in match play before a March 8 slate of placement matches to determine final standings. Austria will compete in Group B along with South Korea, New Zealand and Scotland.
"I'm going to take this experience back to IU so I can learn from it," said Leitner. "I would definitely not have this opportunity to play in the Cyprus Cup without my teammates at Indiana."
