Bloomington, Ind. – Twenty-three hits helped Indiana baseball (5-7-1) top the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (8-7), 12-1, on Saturday afternoon. The 23 hits for IU are the most since also getting 23 against Butler on March 23 of last season.
Six Hoosiers had multi-hit games with senior Craig Dedelow leading the way with four hits, including two doubles, to go along with an RBI and two runs scored. Freshmen Matt Gorski and Jake Matheny, and sophomore Luke Miller each had three hits, with Matheny driving in two runs and Miller one run. Freshman Jeremy Houston collected a pair of hits and two RBI, while senior Alex Krupa grabbed his first home run in an Indiana uniform as part of a two-hit day. Junior Colby Stratten went 2-for-2 off the bench with an RBI, while senior Tony Bulter also chipped in an RBI.
Junior Brian Hobbie (1-1) tossed six solid innings and held the Blue Raiders to just three hits and mixed in three strikeouts, while allowing just one run in the effort. Freshmen Cameron Beauchamp, Brad Littleton and Cal Krueger each tossed one inning of scoreless action and allowed just two hits over their three innings of relief work.
Three-straight singles loaded the bases for the Hoosiers in the bottom of the first, but good glove work by Middle Tennessee's Carson Lester helped turn a 1-2-3 groundout double play to wipe away Indiana's chance.
Indiana broke the game open with a seven-run third inning. Krupa led off with a solo home run to right field. Following a walk to Matt Gorski, Dedelow notched a double to push Gorski to third. Singles by Fineman and Matheny drove in both Gorski and Dedelow, while Luke Miller capitalized off an error. Back-to-back singles by Butler and senior Logan Sowers pushed across Indiana's fifth and sixth runs of the inning. Houston pushed across one final run off an infield single.
Hobbie tossed a 1-2-3 fourth inning before Indiana used an RBI single to left field by Miller in the bottom of the frame to up its lead to 8-0. The Hoosiers then broke open for five runs in the home half of the fifth, upping the score to 12-0. Gorski singled up the middle and scored on Dedelow's second double of the day. Matheny then drove in Dedelow off a single to left field and advanced to third on Miller's single through the left side. Stratten collected an RBI in a pinch hit appearance on a single back up the middle.
Middle Tennessee broke the Hoosiers' shutout in the top of the sixth and manufactured a run to make it 12-1. Indiana's bullpen worked efficiently and faced the minimum in both the seventh and eighth inning. The Blue Raiders were able to put two on in the ninth before Indiana closed the door with a 6-4-3 double play.
IU closes out its series with Middle Tennessee on Sunday with a first pitch time slated for 1:05 p.m.
