Indiana 16, Oakland 4
In the day's first game, the Hoosiers used two seven-run innings to run past Oakland in six innings, 16-4. The 16 runs for Indiana was a season high, as was the 16 hits.
Indiana saw three-hit performances from freshman Gabbi Jenkins and junior Rebecca Blitz, while seniors Erin Lehman and CaraMia Tsirigos and juniors Taylor Uden and Rachel O'Malley each picked up a pair of hits.
Oakland took an early lead in the first on a trio of two-out singles, capped by Kelsie Swanson's knock to right field to plate Mikayela Marciniak and make it 1-0.
The Hoosiers quickly responded in the following inning to take a 2-1 lead. After junior Aimilia McDonough reached on an Oakland fielding error, junior Rachel O'Malley singled through the left side. Jenkins' second base knock of the day brought both runners home as she popped the ball over the head of the second baseman.
The lead wouldn't last long as Oakland plated three runs in the bottom of the second on three two-out base knocks. After the Golden Grizzlies took a 4-2 advantage, freshman Emily Goodin stepped in to relieve Emily Kirk and picked up the final out.
Goodin earned the win for Indiana, picking up her third in as many games. The righty tossed 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and walking three. The day after setting her career high in strikeouts with eight against Western Illinois, she surpassed that total with 10 versus Oakland.
A seven-run frame on seven hits and an Oakland error gave Indiana the advantage for good in the third inning. Blitz and Lehman led off the inning with back-to-back singles by Blitz and Lehman before Tsirigos sent a double off the wall to bring them both home. After freshman Bella Norton reached on a throwing error, RBI singles by McDonough and junior Taylor Uden made it 6-4. The first Indiana triple of the season brought in two more runs off the bat of O'Malley. It was the first triple of O'Malley's Hoosier career. Sophomore Sarah Galovich put the cap on the inning as her sacrifice fly brought in O'Malley.
Indiana blew the game open in the sixth, scoring seven more runs on six hits. Jenkins' picked up IU's second triple of the day with one out and was brought in on a single from Blitz. After Lehman's double to center plated Blitz, Tsirigos knocked an RBI single through the right side. The fourth Indiana run of the inning on a single by Uden before a wild pitch and a rundown resulted in two more scores. The final run of the game came off the bat of Galovich, who doubled to plate McDonough.
Indiana 9, Memphis 1
The Hoosiers saw another three-hit performance from Blitz in the second game, as she also collected three RBI and scored a run in the win. Indiana saw two-hit games from Jenkins, Tsirigos and Norton, who knocked her first career homer against the Tigers.
Sophomore Tara Trainer earned the victory for Indiana in the circle, tossing a complete game and striking out six.
The Hoosiers loaded the bases in the first on a wild pitch on a third strike to Jenkins and singles by Blitz and Tsirigos, but Norton grounded into a double play ball to end the threat.
Jenkins again reached base in the third as she led off the inning with a single then stole second base. Two batters later, she crossed home plate as Tsirigos singled up the middle to give Indiana the lead. Tsirigos was then brought in on Norton's two-run homer to left center to make it 3-0.
A pair of Memphis singles and a walk loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, but Trainer's third strikeout of the game left them stranded.
A five-run fourth inning by Indiana put the game out of reach. The Hoosiers loaded the bags on a trio of walks with one away. Blitz brought in two on a double to left center, plating freshman Katie Lacefield and McDonough. After Jenkins scored on an illegal pitch, Blitz safely crossed home on a fielder's choice off the bat of Lehman. Norton picked up her third RBI against the Tigers on a double to right center to score Lehman.
The Tigers got on the board in the home half of fourth on an RBI double by Lindsey Stickrod.
However, Indiana quickly got that run back in the fifth. After back-to-back singles by Lacefield and Jenkins, Blitz picked up her second RBI on a single through the right side, plating Lacefield and pushing the lead to 9-1.
Memphis led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk, but three straight outs by Trainer ended the game in five frames.
The Hoosiers close out play in Memphis on Sunday as they face Buffalo at 12:15 p.m. ET.
