#IUWP suffers first loss in seven weeks; win streak ends at nine
SAN DIEGO – The water polo Hoosiers put their nine-game winning streak on the line in their first game of the Aztec Invitational on Saturday morning at the Aztec Aquaplex. The contest between the No. 13 Hoosiers (11-3) and No. 12 San Jose State (7-11) came down to the wire, with each team scoring a goal in the final minute, but the Spartans left the pool with the 4-3 result in their favor.
Game 14: San Jose State 4, Indiana 3
SJSU: 1 – 0 – 2 – 1
IU: 0 – 0 – 2 – 1
Indiana Goals: Matthews (1), Myers (1), Beadle (1)
SJSU Goals: Jensen (1), Robinson (1), Paradi (1), Momen (1)
Gaudreault: 15 saves, 1 steal
Junior goalkeeper Jessica Gaudreault gave her all in the game with another season high performance. Gaudreault made 15 stops for the second time this season, tying her single-game career high. She conceded just four goals, which tied a season low (CSU Northridge, 1/21/17) for a four-quarter shift.
Gaudreault wasn't the only contributor on the defensive end. Four Hoosier field players—Mollie Williams, Jennifer Beadle, Sarah Myers, and Joelle Nacouzi—ended the game with three steals apiece. Those totals match career highs for Williams, Beadle, and Nacouzi, while Myers stretches her team-leading tally to 24 swipes on the year.
On offense, the Hoosiers saw three different players enter the score sheet. Kelly Matthews responded after the Spartans' 2-0 goal to break the scoring drought in the third quarter. That goal, the 173rd of Matthews' career, lifted the junior into a tie with Candyce Schroeder (2013-16) for seventh-place on Indiana's all-time leaderboard.
Myers found the goal a minute after Matthews to tie the game at 2-2, but a late Spartan goal gave San Jose State a 3-2 lead entering the fourth quarter.
With time winding down against the Hoosiers' tying efforts, Indiana called a time out with 76 seconds left in the game. The Hoosiers executed the ensuing play to perfection, eventually finding Beadle for the crucial 3-3 score.
Unfortunately for Indiana, the Spartans had one more play left in the tank. They took a time out with 35 seconds left on the clock and converted the scoring chance with 15 seconds remaining.
The defeat is Indiana's first loss in a 49-day stretch, dating back to their opening weekend defeat against UCLA. The winning streak comes to a halt at nine games, which tied for the fourth-longest in program history.
