MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Indiana Softball picked up its third-straight run-rule victory as the Hoosiers shut out Buffalo in five innings, 8-0. The win completed a perfect 5-0 weekend for Indiana, the first five-win weekend since the 2013 Georgia Tech Classic.
Sophomore pitcher Tara Trainer earned her second complete game shutout of the season as she gave up just three hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Senior CaraMia Tsirigos turned in a 2-for-2 performance with two RBI and a run scored while junior Aimilia McDoough went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Freshman Gabbi Jenkins also collected a pair of hits and brought in a run. She and Tsirigos have now turned in three consecutive multi-hit performances. A day after knocking her first career homer, freshman Bella Norton also had a big day at the plate as she collected two hits.
Jenkins and junior Rebecca Blitz led off the Indiana attack with back-to-back singles in the first before senior Erin Lehman reached on a fielder's choice. Tsirigos brought Blitz and Lehman home as she doubled off the wall in right center on her fifth double bagger of the season. Norton's single put runners on the corners for McDonough, who continued her hot streak with an RBI single through the left side. The knock by McDonough marked her sixth straight contest with at least one hit as she has collected nine hits in six games.
Buffalo puts it first runner on in the third on a leadoff double to left center. However, on a popup on a bunt attempt, first baseman Taylor Uden tossed the ball to Lehman at second base to double up the runner.
Indiana put up four more runs in the third to take a 7-0 lead, starting with an RBI single by Uden to score freshman Sydney Hester. The first career triple from freshman Katie Lacefield brought in McDonough and Uden. During the five games in Memphis, Indiana collected three combined triples after not recording a single one prior to the weekend. The final score of the frame came off the bat of Jenkins, who singled to short to plate Lacefield.
McDonough's second hit of the game came an inning later as she sent one back to the pitcher to score Lehman and make it 8-0.
After surrendering a pair of singles in the fifth, Trainer settled in to collect a strikeout and end the game in five innings.
Up next, Indiana (11-13) opens up play at Andy Mohr Field in the Hoosier Classic. The two-day event kicks off on March 18 and will pit IU against Bowling Green and University of Illinois-Chicago.
