BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – On Monday afternoon, Indiana rowing head coach Steve Peterson officially dedicated two racing shells at the Dale England Rowing Facility. One shell, named G. Fredrick Glass, was dedicated in honor of current Indiana University Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass. The other shell was donated by P.A. Mack and is named the Honorable P.A. Mack Jr.
"If you look around all the shells in our boathouse, all of them are named after people that have special meaning to the IU rowing program and these two shells are no different," Peterson said. "Fred Glass has had a huge impact on our program, as he has with all of IU Athletics. Without Fred, we would not have the equipment we do or this amazing boathouse. So, this is our small way of saying thank you to him for all of his support. And with P.A., as I got to know him more, I quickly realized what a huge impact he has had on athletics and women's athletics."
The G. Fredrick Glass is an 8-oar shell that was actually in used during the 2015-16 season, with the Hoosiers competing in it at the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, California with it.
"I'm honored to have a shell named after me," Glass said. "It's really great to be in this boathouse, which was more of a pipe dream when I first sat down with Coach Peterson and we talked about what the program needed. I think bit-by-bit, we have really been able to invest and you, the students, have more than done your part in taking us from not being where we wanted to be to perennially being in the NCAA Championships. So, thank you because you guys are true students participating in intercollegiate athletics – in some ways, maybe the purest form in the department – and it is much appreciated."
The Honorable P.A. Mack Jr. is a 4-oar shell and will be used during the 2016-17 spring season as the Hoosiers eye a fourth straight trip to the national championships.
"I have received a lot of plaques and awards, but this is so meaningful and I'm really honored," said Mack. "This program has grown so much from the time we approved women's sports. I can't imagine all of these changes that have taken place here. I go back to when we passed Title IX in the 1970s and now look at all of the opportunities you have now compared to what was available back then. Things have really changed. But this is a tremendous honor and I appreciate all that you have done and all that you will do at this tremendous university."
