Hoosiers enter historic game with top-ranked Trojans
HONOLULU – The Indiana water polo squad continued westward after their weekend at the Aztec Invitational for a week in the Aloha State. Although traveling to Hawaii is an ideal destination for anyone on Spring Break, the No. 15 Hoosiers (13-4) are destined for two of their toughest games of the season.
Indiana finishes their non-conference schedule with another pair of top ten teams, starting with the best of the best in No. 1 Southern California (19-0) at midnight tonight (Friday, March 17 at 12:00 a.m. ET). The game bears extra significance for the Trojans, who bring a 46-game winning streak into the pool. The Trojans are one win away from setting a standalone NCAA Women's Water Polo record for consecutive victories.
After that, they'll return to the pool on Saturday night at 11:30 p.m. ET for a rematch with No. 8 Hawaii. The Hoosiers pulled out the upset win over the Wahine at the season-opening UCSB Winter Invite, with the 8-4 victory sparking a nine-game win streak.
The Hoosiers split last weekend's games at the Aztec Invitational, notching wins over Whittier and No. 16 UC San Diego while falling in games against No. 12 San Jose State and No. 17 San Diego State. Both losses came by just one goal apiece; the closer against the Aztecs was settled in sudden victory.
The Wahine pushed their record north of .500 with their 11-6 win over Long Beach State last weekend. They hold top-20 wins over Pacific, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, and Loyola Marymount but have dropped four of their last five contests.
Fans can follow the action on Hawaii's twitter feed, @WahineWP, as Hawaii will host the triad at the Duke Kahanamoku Athletic Complex. A recap of the day's proceedings will follow the next morning.
