The Hoosier senior wrestles for 7th place in Session V
ST. LOUIS – Indiana senior Nate Jackson locked up Indiana's 81st All-American accolade with a 3-1 (SV-1) win over 11-seed Emery Parker (Illinois) in the 184 lbs. blood round. Jackson adds the honor to his podium finish in 2016 (5th – 174), becoming Indiana's first two time All-American since Angel Escobedo (4, 2007-10) and the seventh multiple All-America recipient under head coach Duane Goldman.
Jackson and Parker battled to the end for the hotly-contested podium at 184 lbs. After a scoreless first period, Jackson broke out of Parker's short ride to take a 1-0 lead into the final regulation period. Parker's escape came before Jackson could build a ride point, tying the bout at 1-1. That score held to the last whistle.
Determined to leave his final NCAA Championships as an All-American, Jackson issued the decisive blow in sudden victory. He locked into a shot on the edge, swung around to Parker's back, and scored the only takedown of the bout.
Fans could feel the triumph from their seats. Jackson tore off the anklets, saw his right hand rise toward the rafters, and allowed his left hand to join the celebration.
The jubilee ended when Jackson left the circle, for he had yet to complete his evening. He returned to the mat at the session's end for a consolation quarterfinal bout with TJ Dudley (Nebraska).
The bout promised an enticing rematch between two foes that last clashed in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Midlands Championships. The grapplers traded blows throughout the seven minutes, but Dudley capitalized and countered Jackson's shots for a 4-0 decision.
