BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball (12-14) split the first day of the home-opening Hoosier Classic, defeating Bowling Green in six innings, 11-3, and falling to UIC in eight innings, 11-9.
Indiana 11, Bowling Green 3
The first game of the day saw homers from junior Taylor Uden and senior Erin Lehman as the Hoosiers earned their sixth straight win and fourth straight run-rule victory.
Lehman turned in a 3-for-5 performance, bringing in a career-high five runs and scoring once. Another Hoosier with a career day was freshman Gabbi Jenkins who collected a personal-best four hits and four RBI.
Sophomore Tara Trainer earned the victory for Indiana in her eighth complete game of the season. Trainer struck out five, walked one and surrendered three runs in the win, her fifth of the year.
The Falcons jumped to an early 1-0 lead in second on an RBI single by Taylor Blevins, however the Hoosiers tied the game in the home half on Uden's homer to left center.
Bowling Green's Chelsea Raker answered with a solo homer of her own in the following frame and the Falcons carried the 2-1 advantage into the fourth before Indiana hung four runs to take the lead for good. Jenkins' RBI single started the scoring as she brought in junior Rachel O'Malley before Lehman's three-run shot to left center plated junior Rebecca Blitz and Jenkins.
After the Falcons cut the deficit to 6-3 on an RBI single by Aspen Searle, the Hoosiers responded with a three-run fifth inning. Jenkins brought in Uden on a sacrifice fly, followed by a two-run double by Lehman to score freshman Katie Lacefield and sophomore Sarah Galovich.
Runs by Lacefield and Galovich in the sixth ended the game early as Jenkins hit a two-run single to secure an 11-3 run-rule win.
UIC 11, Indiana 9
In the day's finale, the Hoosiers came back from a seven-run sixth-inning deficit before falling in extras.
Uden collected her second homer of the day as she went a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI and one run. Blitz added three hits while tying her career high with three runs.
UIC took a 1-0 lead in the first before scoring two more in the second as Taylor Cairns sent an RBI triple to right center and advanced home on a Hoosier error.
A double steal by Blitz and Lacefield put the Hoosiers on the board as Lacefield stole home while UIC looked to catch Blitz taking second base. A Flames' error put one more up for Indiana as Blitz made it 3-2.
However, UIC responded by plating six unanswered runs, including a four-run sixth-inning, to take a 9-2 advantage. Tiana Mack-Miller led the charge for the Flames as she brought in four runs in the game on a pair of hits.
Indiana would not go quietly as the Hoosiers put up a four-run frame of their own in the home half of the sixth. Uden's three-run shot to center brought in junior Sarah Thompson and Blitz before an RBI single by Galovich scored senior Kayla Mathewson to make it 9-6.
Thompson made it a one-run game in the seventh as she doubled to left center, bringing Lehman and Blitz home. The tying run game off the bat of freshman Bella Norton, who singled up the middle to score Thompson.
Playing with the international tie-breaker rule in effect, UIC started the eighth with a runner on second. Jennah Speth broke the stalemate as she plated Kayla Wedl on an RBI single before a single by Claire Crane gave the Flames an 11-9 cushion.
Indiana used a UIC fielding error to put two runners on in the bottom of the eighth, but a pair of strikeouts ended the game.
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday as they again host UIC and Bowling Green to close out the weekend. Admission to all Indiana Softball home games is free of charge.
