AUSTIN, Texas – Indiana Women's Basketball junior forward Amanda Cahill has been named to the 2016-17 CoSIDA Academic All-American Third Team, announced by the organization today.
The Clyde, Ohio native becomes the first Academic All-American selection for the Hoosiers since 1989, and just the fourth player in school history. IU now has a total of five Academic All-American selections, with the last a double selection of Ann Mooney and Amy Vanderkolk (1989) and Terri Friedman in 1981 and 1982. Fifteen Division I women's college basketball players earn Academic All-American distinction each year, and Cahill is one of three Big Ten selections on the list this season.
"This is a tremendous honor for Amanda, someone who works so hard in the classroom and on the court," Indiana head coach Teri Moren said. "We could not be happier for her to receive this accomplishment, and truly reflects the hard work she puts in every day."
Cahill holds a 3.90 GPA in Elementary education at Indiana and is also a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree (2015-16, 2016-17). She is also a 2016 Academic All-Big Ten honoree and most recently named to the All-Big Ten second team. This season, Cahill averages 15.0 points and a team-high 9.2 rebounds to help Indiana to back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in school history.
She shoots 48.2 percent from the floor, a team-high 38.8 percent from 3-point range and 79.1 percent from the free throw line. Her 11 double-doubles are a team-high as she has record 28 in her IU career, the sixth-most in school history. In addition, Cahill dishes out 2.9 assists per game, 1.7 steals and ties a team-high 18 blocks and third with 47 made 3-pointers.
This season, Cahill became the 26th member of the 1,000-point club at Indiana and the 14th player to record over 1,000 points and 600 rebounds. Her 1,284 career points currently ranks 14th all-time while her 785 rebounds are seventh all-time in program history.
The junior forward was also named Big Ten Player of the Week (Dec. 26) and to the Big Ten Player of the Week honor roll this season (Feb. 20). She also holds a 22-game double-figure scoring streak having recorded 28 of 29 games in double figures and set new career-highs this season in points, rebounds, assists, steals, field goals made, 3-point field goals made, free throws made and minutes played.
Cahill and No. 4 seed Indiana will open play in the Big Ten Tournament on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
