
Indiana Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season in Tempe

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the first time in a couple of weeks the Indiana University track and field team will be back in action. A total of 40 athletes with wear the cream and crimson this weekend. The team will join forces with Nebraska, Michigan and Penn State to square off against a quartet of Pac-12 schools: Arizona, Arizona State, California and UCLA.
The two day meet will begin on Friday will a couple of field events and the 5,000m run. The women's hammer throw will kick off the outdoor season at 4:00 p.m. EST. Nakel McClinton, an All-American in the hammer throw, will join Nycia Ford in the second flight of the women's hammer throw. The men's hammer throw will immediately follow the women's final. Andrew Miller, the school record holder in the weight throw, will compete in the men's competition.
Day two will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a packed slate of field events. The running portion of the meet will not begin until 9:15 p.m. EST, with the concluding event, the men's 4x400m relay, starting at about 12:30 a.m. EST.
Sydney Clute will be making her 2017 Indiana debut. The two-time Big Ten champion sat out the indoor season for redshirt purposes. The senior has won the last two Big Ten championships that she has vaulted in.
The reigning Big Ten Athlete of the Championships, Treyton Harris, will have a busy weekend. Harris will compete in a trio of events, including the long jump, high jump and 100m dash. The sophomore scored 18 points in the Big Ten Championships by winning the long jump and claiming the runner-up spot in the high jump.
Willie Morrison with compete in the discus throw as well as the shot put in Tempe. The sophomore won the Big Ten Championship in the shot put on his way to earning All-America accolades in the indoor season.
Eric Bethea, an indoor All-American, won the Big Ten Championship in the triple jump. He will look to carry his momentum from a tremendous indoor season into the outdoor portion of the schedule. He will compete in both the triple jump and the long jump this weekend.
