Lloyd's Four Home Run Day Sparks Indiana in Doubleheader Sweep of Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. – Indiana Baseball (12-8-1) picked up a doubleheader sweep of the Northwestern Wildcats (13-9 and 6-5) on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Matt Lloyd highlighted the day with four home runs, while junior Brian Hobbie hurled his first career complete game in the second contest.
Game 1 – Indiana 13, Northwestern 9
Lloyd collected three home runs, marking the first time a Hoosier has accomplished the feat since Josh Phegley in 2009. The freshman finished with four hits and five RBI, both career-highs. Freshman Matt Gorski and senior Logan Sowers also collected home runs, with Gorski also picking up two hits and three RBI. Sophomore Luke Miller grabbed two hits and two talks while also scoring twice, while senior Tony Butler rounded out Indiana's multi-hit performances with two hits and two RBI. Senior Alex Krupa and freshman Jake Matheny also drove in a run in the effort.
Junior B.J. Sabol jumped to 2-0 on the season with a three-inning effort in relief. He struck out four batters and held Northwestern to just one run and three hits. Sophomore Jonathan Stiever started for Indiana and went 2.2 innings.
Northwestern jumped ahead in the second inning with three runs before Indiana responded with three of its own in the top of the third to erase the damage. Gorski punished the Wildcats with a three-run home run, which scored Butler and junior Colby Stratten, who each walked earlier in the frame.
The Wildcats turned for five runs in the bottom half of the frame to take an 8-3 lead. Lloyd chipped the deficit to four runs in the top of the fourth with a solo shot to left field, making it an 8-4 game until Indiana broke out for nine runs in the final four innings of action.
A four-run sixth inning began with senior Craig Dedelow doubling down the right field line. A wild pitch placed him on third, while a walk to Miller put runners on the corners for the Hoosiers. Matheny's sacrifice fly cut the Wildcats' lead to three runs and scored Dedelow. A walk to Sowers put runners on first and second before Lloyd reset the score to 8-all with a three-run home run for his second round tripper of the game.
Sabol tossed a seamless bottom of the sixth before Northwestern regained a one-run lead in the home half of the seventh. A solo shot for Sowers tied the contest back up for Indiana in the eighth. Lloyd followed with his third home run of the game to give Indiana back a one-run lead. A double by Butler set up senior Alex Krupa for an RBI single, pushing Indiana's lead to 11-9.

Game 2 – Indiana 6, Northwestern 5
Hobbie hurled IU's first complete game of 2017 and the first of his career, striking out four in the nine innings of work.

Early scoring put the Hoosiers ahead 4-3 after the first inning. Krupa led off the game with a double to right-center field and scored on Dedelow's RBI single. Lloyd then went deep for the fourth time in six at bats and drove in three runs with his second three-run home run of the afternoon. Northwestern followed with a three-spot in the bottom half of the frame.

Northwestern reliever Matt Gannon was effective in his outing, allowing one hit and one run in 4.1 innings of work. That one run was insurance in the top of the ninth. With Indiana leading 5-3, Krupa singled and stole two bases to put him on third. Gorski bunted him home on a suicide squeeze to make it a 6-3 game.
The Wildcats threatened in the bottom of the ninth, plating two runs, but Hobbie struck out the game's final batter to secure the win.
Indiana and Northwestern will conclude the series at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday.
