Hoosiers Remain in Fifth Place at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 4-ranked Indiana University men' swimming and diving team had yet another great finals session at the 2017 NCAA Championships at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. on Friday night.
Heading into the fourth and final day, the Hoosiers remain in fifth place with a total score of 189.5 points, just 7.5 points behind NC State in fourth. Texas sits atop the team standings with a score of 391.5, followed by California with 253 and Florida with 224.5.
Blake Pieroni continued his fantastic NCAA Championships in the Championship Final of the 200 freestyle, tying for second place with a time of 1:31.16. Pieroni, who tied with USC's Dylan Carter, registered the second-fastest time in school history.
Pieroni's finish is the best for a IU swimmer in the event at the NCAA's since Jim Montgomery placed second in the 200 free in 1977.
In the Consolation Final of the 200 freestyle, Mohamed Samy took fifth to place 13th overall with a personal-best time of 1:33.49. With his mark, Samy improves his standing as the third-best performer in the event in program history.
Michael Hixon and James Connor capped their great NCAA Championships on Friday night, as the duo earned All-America honors for the second time.
Hixon placed fifth overall with a total of 455.35, while Connor placed sixth with a score of 435.30. On Thursday, the dup finished second and third, respectively, in the 1-meter dive for the Hoosiers.
Vini Lanza had a historic swim in the Championship Final of the 100 butterfly, placing sixth overall with a time of 45.52. Lanza's mark is the third-best time in school history and his sixth-place finish is the best for any Hoosier in the event at the NCAA Championships since Gary Hall placed second in 1973.
In the 200 medley relay, the Indiana team of Bob Glover, Ian Finnerty, Lanza and Ali Khalafalla placed fifth in the Consolation Final to finish 13th overall with a time of 1:24.60. The 13th-place finish is the best for IU in the event since placing 13th in 2012.
With their performances on Friday night, eight Hoosiers earned All-America honors – Pieroni (10th career honor), Lanza (seventh), Khalafalla (seventh), Hixon (seventh), Connor (fifth), Glover (fourth), Finnerty (fourth) and Samy (first).
The No. 4 Indiana Hoosiers will continue competition at the 2017 NCAA Championships on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. ET with the prelims of the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay and platform dive.
