Stage set for Big Ten’s storied water polo rivalry
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The moment has arrived.
All of Indiana's preseason training, study in the film room, and 19 games played out of conference have built to this final eight-game stretch against the CWPA. These games will go a long way to putting the top team on the inside track for NCAA Championship qualification at the upcoming CWPA Championships in Bloomington. Saturday, however, feels more like a standalone event than part of the conference schedule.
The Hoosiers and Wolverines will meet for their 70th installment of the Big Ten's fiercest water polo rivalry. The game receives its usual treatment, airing to a global audience on the Big Ten Network.
No. 15 Indiana Hoosiers (13-6, 0-0) at No. 7 Michigan Wolverines (17-8, 0-0)

First Meeting: January 31, 1998
Series Lead: Michigan, 46-21-2
Last 10 Games: Indiana, 6-4
A Storied Series
The rivalry between Indiana and Michigan has blossomed into one of the top national clashes over the last 19 seasons. Both teams are the only two at the varsity level in the Big Ten, and both are consistently the only non-coastal teams in the top 15. Those factors foster a rivalry of mutual respect, but neither side will have time for pleasantries when they take the pool.
This season, both teams enter the game ranked in the top 15, and the contest could have massive implications on the race for the top CWPA seed.
Last Time: Top-10 Weekend in Hawaii
The Hoosiers wrapped up their non-conference schedule last week in the Aloha State, as they continued their westward journey from the Aztec Invite in San Diego to a week in Hawaii over spring break. It wasn't all sunshine and paradise, however, as Indiana took on two top-10 squads at the toughest home pool advantage in the country.
It started against top-ranked USC, who set the Division-I record winning streak (47) with a 15-2 win over Indiana. After that the Hoosiers took the pool against No. 8 Hawaii, who won 11-5 and evened the season series at 1-1.
Finding That Midseason Groove
Kelly Matthews locked into midseason form in the back half of the nonconference slate and returned to her typical high scoring output. In the first 10 games of the year, Matthews totaled 14 goals and five assists; since then, the junior has added 21 goals and 10 assists to the season tally. She leads Indiana in goals (35) and field blocks (6).
It's a continuation of successful performances in the cage for Matthews' junior teammate Jessica Gaudreault. In 10 games this year, Gaudreault has 10 or more saves. Her last game against Hawaii (8 saves) pushed Gaudreault to fifth on Indiana's all-time saves leaderboard (642).
Instant Impact
The dynamic freshman duo of Mollie Williams and Joelle Nacouzi have provided an irreplaceable spark in their first few months with Indiana. Nacouzi continues to lead the Hoosiers in assists (16) while sharing the top steal tally (28) with Sarah Myers. Williams is the only Hoosier with either a goal or an assist in all 19 games this season.
The pair, along with rising newcomer Emily Powell, has done well to diversify Indiana's attack. Matthews, Nacouzi, and Williams have combined for 21 multi-goal performances on the year, and six different players have double-digit season goal totals.
Of Note...
• Six players have expanded their play to the international level. Jessica Gaudreault is a member of Canada's Senior National Team; Sarah Myers, Kelly Matthews, and Joelle Nacouzi have all played for Canada at the junior level; Mollie Williams and Emily Powell have played in Australia's youth system.
• Freshman Gillian Gatecliff will play in her hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan for the first time in her collegiate career.
• Indiana's next game with Princeton will feature a showdown of the starting goalkeepers for Team Canada (Gaudreault) and Team USA (Ashleigh Johnson).
