BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana football head coach Tom Allen spoke with the media following Saturday morning's practice.
"I thought it was what you wanted to see on both sides of the ball," Allen said. "The defense got after them early and the offense bounced back after we started driving the ball. It's hard when you are the offense, doing situational things that are stagnate from the beginning. The flow is what allows them to get going. I really felt like they were making plays in space which is always the key. Both sides were very effective when they needed to be. I was really encouraged by the quality of our kicks, their confidence, their timing. Our punt work, PAT field work. Lot of positives for sure."
In today's practice, the Hoosiers suited up for a scrimmage on the fields adjacent to Memorial Stadium.
"The way we structured it was, we had segmented pieces," Allen said. "Every play is called in the office but when we drove it, we did drives from the 30, drives from the 40, and then the overtime drive. We make situational calls on a script, just like we would on a game. Those are as game-like as we could get, which is the whole point."
Senior quarterback Richard Lagow returned from a passing camp in San Diego over spring break and his coach has already taken notice of his improvements and those of his fellow QB's.
"It's demeanor, it's how you carry yourselves on the field," Allen said. "How you speak to your teammates. The whole confidence piece is what I've been encouraged by from our quarterbacks. That to me is really what it comes down to because that's infectious. That position is starting to understand that a little more."
The energy hasn't stopped with the quarterbacks. Coach Allen can see the whole team start to get the effect.
"Those guys on the defensive side of the ball, they truly believe, and that's helped the offense," Allen said. "We had a really important session as a team in our team meeting. The way I address the defense, I use those chances here in spring to address the whole team. Some of it is new things, a lot of it is core principals that I believe in. For the offensive guys, for them to see it and hear with their own eyes and ears, there's no question it's becoming part of the whole team. We want to create an environment where they want to be here."
