BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sydney Clute wasted little time returning to form in the pole vault. After sitting out the indoor season due to redshirt restrictions, Clute started the outdoor season with a bang.
The redshirt senior earned Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors for her record shattering performance at the Pac-12 v. Big Ten Challenge in Tempe, Arizona. On the evening she carried a clean sheet through 4.42m (14-6), which matched her own school record and established the meet record. She finished the night with a clearance of 4.55m (14-11), the best jump in the nation by nearly a full foot.
Her mark also topped the Big Ten Conference record set by Stephanie Richartz (Illinois) in 2015. The previous record was 4.45m (14-7.25). According to the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Clute's mark is the ninth best pole vault performance in NCAA history.
In her time at Indiana University, Clute has won two Big Ten Championships and earned All-America accolades on three occasions. Sydney finished eighth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2014 and fourth a season ago to claim First-Team All-America honors. In 2016 she was named Second-Team All-America at the Indoor National Championships.
Last season, Clute registered Big Ten Championships in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. At the outdoor meet she established the Nebraska facility, meet and school record after clearing 4.42m (14-6).
