BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Indiana baseball (4-5-1) fell to the Samford Bulldogs, 6-5, on a walk-off three-run home run.
Junior Brian Hobbie (0-1) tossed a quality 5.1 innings. He struck out two and allowed two runs while scattering five hits. Freshman Cameron Beauchamp went 2.1 innings and struck out two.
Sophomore Matt Lloyd notched his first home run with Indiana and drove in two RBI, while also scoring twice. Sophomore Ryan Fineman picked up three RBI with a double. Senior Tony Butler also chipped in two doubles, with freshman Jake Matheny added a late-inning double.
Butler grabbed an easy standup double down the left field line in the third inning but Indiana left the frame empty before Lloyd put the Hoosiers up 2-0 in the fourth. Following a single by senior Craig Dedelow, Lloyd took a 0-2 pitch over the fence in right-center field.
Hobbie continued dealing efficiently through the fourth. Back-to-back singles in the fifth gave Samford its best chance yet in the game, but Beauchamp forced a pop out at third to strand two.
Two-out hitting and a Bulldog error helped Indiana plate three runs in the sixth. Senior Alex Krupa led off with a double to right field and was followed by sophomore Luke Miller's walk. An error on Lloyd's ball loaded the bases until Fineman's double to left-center cleared the bases for a 5-0 lead.
Samford broke the shutout in the bottom of the fifth with two runs to cut the Hoosiers' lead to 5-2 and added a third run in the eighth.
The Bulldogs capitalized in the final frame when a throwing error granted Greg Mula first base. A single put two on before Kenny Williams Jr. ended the game with a walk-off three-run home run.
Indiana and Samford conclude its three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
