BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The 2017 college football season has officially begun for the Indiana Hoosiers.
IU opened up its first full season under head coach Tom Allen with a helmets only practice on the practice fields just north of Memorial Stadium. The team is coming off a season that ended with a second consecutive bowl appearance, but is looking to take the next step. Senior linebacker Tegray Scales believes that the defense will be vital in doing so.
"Our main themes are takeaways, effort and communication," Scales said. "Those are the things that will help us be a top 25 defense."
The other side of the ball saw many fresh faces on the coaching staff making their Hoosier debuts. They wasted little time making an impact on the team. Mirroring the enthusiasm of Coach Allen, the new coaches brought their unique energy to the practice field. Simmie Cobbs, Jr., knows that the hard work and new coaching style, especially from wide receivers coach Grant Heard, will pay off during the season.
"It is different," Cobbs said. "It was fun, fast and intense. He demands a lot and he is going to hold us to a high standard. As receivers, we are taking that in and accepting it. We are pushing ourselves as hard as we can. In the end, it is going to pay itself off."
After missing most of last season, getting back out onto the field and getting back to what he loves was well worth the wait for Cobbs.
"It was great to be back," Cobbs said. "We had a lot of fun out there, especially on the offensive side of the ball. It was high-intensity. It was fast. There is more to work on, but we are looking good."
Scales echoed the statements made by his teammate. The defense, as to be expected under the direction of Coach Allen, came out ready to play from the opening whistle.
"The team came out with a lot of energy today," Scales said. "It was exciting to be back out and have some fun doing what we do."
