BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's tennis team continued their momentum from last weekend and won two more matches on Saturday at the IU Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers (9-5) started the day with a 4-3 win over West Virginia and closed with a 7-0 victory over Southern Illinois.
"I loved the way we battled today," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "We lost the doubles point to West Virginia but came back strong in the singles matches. That is the kind of fight we will need as we head into Big Ten play next week."
After dropping the doubles point to the Mountaineers (4-6) the Hoosiers won three straight singles matches to claim a 3-1 lead in the match. West Virginia closed that gap to 3-2 with a win of their own.
It was sophomore Caitlin Bernard, who clinched the match for the Hoosiers with an 8-6 tiebreak in her second set.
Against Southern Illinois (4-6) the Hoosiers came out winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the overall match.
Bernard and freshman Pauline Jahren put the Hoosiers up 3-0 with straight set wins in singles and senior Kim Schmider clinched the match with a three-set victory on court four.
Up next the Hoosiers will open Big Ten play on the road at Iowa on Saturday March 11 with an 11:00 a.m. match.
