BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Indiana baseball (4-6-1) dropped the final game if its three-game series with the Samford Bulldogs, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon.
Indiana's one though five hitters each collected a hit, with sophomore Ryan Fineman driving in a run. Freshman Jeremy Houston produced two RBI, with sophomore Luke Miller and freshmen Matt Lloyd and Matt Gorski all scoring runs.
Freshman Andrew Saalfrank (0-1) threw five innings and mixed four hits with four strikeouts in addition to allowing two earned runs.
With two outs in the third, senior Craig Dedelow doubled to right field. Senior Logan Sowers followed with a walk to put two on but a fielder's choice wiped Indiana's opportunity. Two infield hits helped Samford score three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Indiana took advantage of Lloyd's leadoff walk in the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-1. Following Lloyd's walk, an error on Gorski's groundout granted Llyod third base before Houston's sacrifice fly scored Lloyd.
The Hoosiers made it a one-run game in the sixth. Gorski notched a one-out single to right field and advanced to second off a wild pitch. A fly out by senior Tony Butler pushed Gorski up to third base, while Houston's sacrifice fly brought the score to 3-2. A solo home run in the bottom of the sixth brought the Bulldogs' lead back up to two, 4-2.
Fineman's one-out single in the seventh brought the score to 4-3 and scored Miller, who led off the inning with a single to left field. Indiana would get runners to second and third before Samford collected the third out of the inning. Samford got a run back in the bottom of the frame and forced junior Austin Foote to inherit a tough second and third situation with one out. Foote forced a fly out and a swinging strikeout to get out of the jam.
Indiana has a quick turnaround with a Tuesday contest at Evansville at 7 p.m.
