BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University is mourning the loss of alum Mark Laesch, who passed away at his home in Noblesville, Ind. after a battle with ALS on March 4. He was 62 years old.
Laesch played baseball at Indiana University from 1974-76 where he was an All-Big Ten First Team selection in 1976 and led the team in at-bats (152) and runs (34) in 1975. He will most be remembered for making his mark on the collegiate golf world, as the founder of prominent scoring tool, Golfstat.
Laesch founded Golfstat in 1984, and his programs essentially took the guesswork out of college golf. From live scoring to detailed statistics and rankings, Golfstat provided new methods for NCAA coaches and committees to advance the game. After charting his own detailed statistics in baseball and golf, Laesch got the idea to sell the service to college teams. He charged his first client, Illinois State, 25 cents per round.
Laesch is survived by his three children – Jordan, Brian and Kelsey – and fiancé Jennifer Porter.
