BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Following a highly successful showing at the Big Ten Championships, three Hoosiers received Great Lakes Region honors according to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Katherine Receveur was named Great Lakes Regional Track Athlete of the Year. She has rewritten the indoor record book during her redshirt sophomore season. Receveur opened the season by winning the 5,000m run at the Hoosier Open in school record fashion. Her time of 15:50.30 was nearly seven seconds quicker than the mark set by Michelle Dekkers in 1989. At the Big Ten Championships, Receveur won gold in the 5k, breaking her own mark with a Big Ten meet record time of 15:28.99.
Katherine was simply sensational at the Meyo Invite. On day one she teamed up with Brenna Calder, Taylor Williams and Olivia Hippensteel to run a school record time of 11:06.15 in the distance medley relay (DMR). Day two brought another school record performance, this time in the 3,000m run. The Assumption High School product was the first collegiate to cross the finish line, finishing second overall with a time of 9:03.71, again breaking Dekkers' longstanding mark.
Two weeks after breaking the DMR record at the Meyo Invite, the team threw down the 12th fastest time ever run in the NCAA. Their mark of 10:55.94 is good for the second fastest mark in the country this season.
Ron Helmer, fresh off of being named Big Ten Men's Coach of the Year, was recognized as Men's Head Coach of the Year for the Great Lakes Regional. Under the direction of coach Helmer, the men's team secured the Big Ten championship for the first time since 2012.
In his 10th season as the head coach at Indiana, Helmer has built his roster to be as well-rounded and deep as possible. That showed in the Championships as four individuals and one relay team were able to bring home gold. Daniel Kuhn set the Big Ten Championships, school and SPIRE facility record in the 600m run, winning the event for the second consecutive season. The men's DMR team of Joe Murphy, Markevious Roach, Daniel Kuhn and Kyle Mau also took first place.
In the USTFCCCA rankings, the Hoosiers have been as highly ranked as 10th in the country, and have been consistently inside the top 20 since first breaking into the top 20 four weeks ago.
Mike Erb was the 2017 recipient of the Men's Track and Field Assistant Coach of the Year honor for the Great Lakes Regional. Erb, in his third season with the Hoosiers, coaches jumps on the men's side. Erb's group scored 34 points at the Big Ten Championships, including two event winners. Sophomore Eric Bethea took first in the triple jump with a mark of 15.95m (52-4). Bethea is the seventh ranked triple jumper, with a mark of 16.34m (53-7.5) heading into the NCAA Championships this weekend.
Treyton Harris was seeded tied for eighth in the long jump heading into the conference championships. Harris hit three consecutive collegiate best marks to win the event with a leap of 7.71m (23-3.5). He was not done there, on Saturday morning Treyton cleared a lifetime best of 2.17m (7-1.5) in the high jump to secure eight points with a runner-up finish. Paul Galas cleared the same height to finish third, earning his first career podium spot.
The Indiana track and field team will be back in action this weekend at the NCAA Championships. The meet is on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. For complete coverage of the track and field team make sure to follow along on Facebook and Twitter.
