BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Evansville Reitz Memorial High School track and field coach and teacher, Dylan Barnes, has passed away at the age of 43 years old. The cause of death has not been released, but it was considered an unexpected passing.
"Coach Barnes has been a great friend of our program since I started here," said head coach Ron Helmer. "He always showed a great deal of interest in our teams and followed us closely. We, as a program, are deeply saddened by the news of his sudden passing."
Barnes, who served as the head coach for 19 seasons, was a highly touted jumper from Boonville. He competed for Indiana University in the mid 1990's, receiving letters from 1992-95, and earned a degree in English Education and Kinesiology before graduating in 1996. He earned academic All-Big Ten honors in three consecutive seasons, 1992-93, 93-94 and 94-95.
John K. Browning, President of Reitz Memorial, issued his condolences in a brief statement released by the high school.
"The entire Reitz Memorial family is shocked and saddened by the unexpected loss of a beloved and gifted teacher and coach," said Browning. "We ask everyone to join us in prayer for Mr. Barnes, his family and the family of Reitz Memorial."
According to the release, Memorial students, faculty, and staff have been notified. Clergy, and counselors from Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Evansville and Youth First, are at the school today and throughout the week for students and staff.
A candlelight memorial for Barnes will be held at 7 p.m., at the front circle of the school, 1500 Lincoln Ave., Evansville, IN 47714.
