
Track and Field Prepares for the NCAA Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana track and field team is headed south to College Station, Texas for the 2017 Indoor NCAA Championships. A total of 12 athletes will make the trip, the most since having 13 athletes in 2012 NCAA Championships in Boise, Idaho.
The men's distance medley relay (DMR) team will enter the competition with a time of 9:28.14, the second fastest seed time. Joe Murphy will be responsible for the leadoff leg. He will give way to Markevious Roach, running the 400m carry. Daniel Kuhn will be third, running the 800m leg. Redshirt freshman Kyle Mau will handle the anchor section. Jordan Huntoon will make the trip as an alternate. The team is coming off of a Big Ten Championship in the event. The Hoosiers will take to the start line on Friday at 9:55 p.m. ET, the last scheduled track event of the evening.
The women's DMR team will also be competing on Friday evening, with a projected start time of 9:20 p.m. ET. Brenna Calder, the Big Ten runner-up in the mile, will start with the baton. She will hand to Taylor Williams for the second leg and Olivia Hippensteel will handle the 800m carry. Big Ten Champion Katherine Receveur will run the anchor leg. Kendell Wiles will be taken as the alternate runner. The team is seeded second in the event, trailing only Oregon. Their time of 10:55.94 is the 12th fastest collegiate time ever recorded in the DMR and shattered the previous school record.
Kuhn will also run in the open 800m. His time of 1:46.42 is a school record, as well as the fourth fastest time in the NCAA. Kuhn, the Big Ten Champion in the 600m run, was an outdoor All-American in the 800m run last season. The 800m run semifinal heats will be run at 8:10 p.m. ET on Friday night with the finals being run on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Receveur will run individually in the 3,000m run. The sophomore holds the fourth fastest mark in the NCAA this season with a seed time of 9:03.71. She earned silver at the Big Ten Championships in the event with a time of 9:07.04. The women's 3k will be run on Saturday evening starting at approximately 7:00 p.m. ET.
Willie Morrison will throw in the shot put competition. The sophomore won the Big Ten Championships in the shot with a school record put of 19.79m (64-11.25). He will be seeded with the sixth best throw in the NCAA. The competition is slated to begin at 8:20 p.m. ET on Friday night.
Eric Bethea, another Big Ten Champion, will compete in the triple jump. Bethea holds the seventh best mark in the competition with a mark of 16.34m (53-7.5). The action is expected to start at 6:00 p.m. ET on Saturday evening.
