BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Despite getting a quality outing from junior Brian Hobbie, Indiana baseball (14-11, 3-2 Big Ten) fell short in a 3-1 loss to the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday afternoon.
Indiana knocked five hits in the contest. Senior Craig Dedelow went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Senior Alex Krupa, sophomore Luke Miller, and sophomore Matt Lloyd all notched a hit.
Hobbie went six innings, and gave up two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out three Huskers before exiting. Freshman Cal Krueger relieved Hobbie and pitched three innings of scoreless ball, giving up three hits but striking out two.
Nebraska got on the board first, scoring a run on a double play turned by the Hoosiers. Two batters reached base that inning on errors.
The score would remain 1-0 until the sixth inning where the Huskers doubled their lead with an RBI single to left field by Ben Miller
In the bottom half of the sixth, freshman Matt Gorski led things off with a walk. Dedelow ripped a double to left center scoring Gorski, and later moved to third on Luke Miller's single. Indiana had runners at first and third with no outs but couldn't tie the game after lining into a double play and falling victim to a strikeout.
The Cornhuskers didn't waste any time responding to the Hoosiers run as seventh inning leadoff hitter Jake Schleppenbach turned on one, knocking it out to right and gave Nebraska a 3-1 lead.
An inning later, the Hoosiers avoided more damage as Krueger got a Husker hitter to groundout with bases loaded.
Lloyd led off the bottom of the ninth with a base-hit, but the Hoosiers hopes were quickly squandered with a double play.
Indiana and Nebraska finish its series with a 12:05 p.m. start on Sunday.
