Both Varsity 8 Crews Pickup Wins at Double Dual
4/1/2017 10:27:00 PM | Women's Rowing
BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – The Indiana women's rowing team, ranked No. 16 in this week's CRCA poll, welcomed a strong national contingent to Lake Lemon on Saturday for the first Double Dual of the season.
At the end of the day, the Hoosiers came away with two second place finishes, falling to No. 20 Louisville by a 51-49 margin in the morning and then losing to No. 17 Michigan State in the afternoon. In both sessions, the Hoosiers topped Kansas, who was competing in the double dual as a guest.
In the nip and tuck morning session, Louisville opened with a six second win over IU in the 3V/N8 race while Indiana defeated Kansas by just under seven seconds. The Cardinals then won the 3V4 race with a time of 7:54.30 compared to 8:15.20 for Indiana. In the 2V4 heat, it was once again Louisville that crossed the line first with a time of 7:38.2 and Indiana was second with their time of 7:52.44.
In the races among NCAA crews, the margins were much closer, starting with the V4 race where Louisville's time of 7:28.80 was 3.5 seconds faster than Indiana and the Hoosiers were 4.5 seconds ahead of Kansas. At that point, Louisville held a 15-10 lead over IU in the team score.
The margin in the 2V8 race was even less than the V4 race, but the Hoosiers came up just short against Louisville. The Cardinals finished with a time of 6:43.6 while Indiana was just behind them at 6:45.94 and Kansas posted 6:55.79. Louisville went into the final race holding onto a 33-22 lead on IU.
That final race – the V8 – the final split was just 56 one-hundredths of a second and this time it was IU that edged out the win with their time of 6:41.40 to earn 27 points while Louisville grabbed 18 points in second place to edge IU for the session, 51-49.
When the afternoon session of races began – with Indiana competing against Kansas and Michigan State – the Hoosiers got off to a tough start with the N8 placing third with a time of 7:22.40 while Michigan State won the race with a time of 6:54.80.
Michigan State was able to hold off an Indiana charge late in the V4 race to take first with Indiana in second place 13 seconds behind and three seconds ahead of Kansas. Through the V4 race, Michigan State led the team portion of the regatta, 15-8, versus Indiana.
After some circumstances on the water forced the 2V8 race to be moved to the end, it was time for the V8 heat between Michigan State, IU and Kansas. The Hoosiers and Spartans quickly pulled out in front of Kansas and made it clear it would be a two boat race. After battling neck-and-neck for over 1500 meters, the Spartans pulled away at the end to post a time of 6:28.80 to beat Indiana's time of 6:33.45 while Kansas crossed in a time of 6:41.75.
The final race of the day was the 2V8 race and the Hoosiers arguably saved their best for last, registering a time of 6:45.61 to beat Michigan State by five seconds and Kansas by seven seconds.
There were also a couple of races between Kansas and Indiana only in the 2V4 and 3V4 – races that did not count towards the team score – with the Jayhawks winning both races.
Indiana returns to the water at Lake Lemon and Riddle Point next Saturday for the Big Ten Double Dual, as No. 2 Ohio State and Rutgers pay a visit to Bloomington. The racing is tentatively scheduled to begin around 9:00 a.m. ET.
