Tuesday's doubleheader will feature $1 hot dogs and popcorn. In addition, prior to the game we will recognize various Indiana faculty and staff members who have been invited out by the team as part of Faculty Appreciation Night.
SCOUTING PURDUE
The Boilermakers opened Big Ten play by sweeping Michigan State, but have since dropped a series to Iowa and Illinois to sit at a 4-5 Big Ten mark.
Purdue is batting .272 as a team, led by a .404 average from Maya Hughes, which is eighth in the Big Ten. Hughes has 55 hits, 25 runs and 12 RBI on the year. Mallory Baker is close behind with a .391 average, 45 hits, 23 runs and 26 RBI. The Boilermakers have just eight homers on the year, tied for last in the conference, but are fourth in the Big Ten with 291 total hits.
In the circle, Purdue primarily uses a trio of pitchers, including Kaitlynn Moody (3.31 ERA, 6-10, 110.0 IP), Maddie Damon (3.67 ERA, 8-9, 105.0 IP) and Katie Johnson (7.27 ERA, 1-7, 43.1 IP).
Indiana and Purdue have split the last two doubleheader meetings, coming last season and in 2015. Each time, Indiana won the first contest while Purdue was victorious in the second.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hoosiers visited No. 7 Minnesota over the weekend, dropping all three games to the Golden Gophers.
WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS
• On Friday, the Hoosiers put up six runs against Minnesota, marking only the fourth time this season the Golden Gophers have surrendered six or more runs.
• Senior CaraMia Tsirigos batted .714 over the weekend, going 5-for-7 with two homers, four RBI and two runs.
• Tsirigos twice homered in the Friday contest, setting a new career high for home runs in a game and marking the first time since May 7, 2016 that a Hoosier has done so.
LET'S PLAY TWO
• Indiana is no stranger to doubleheaders this season as Tuesday will mark the 15th day this year with two games.
• The Hoosiers are 15-13 this season in doubleheaders and have split just three times in those 14 previous doubleheaders days.
• IU's first three Big Ten series have all been affected by weather, resulting in a doubleheader each of the last three weekends. In those games, Indiana won twice against Rutgers, split with Penn State and dropped two to Minnesota.
HOME HITTING
• In Indiana's seven home games in 2017, IU is batting .388 as a team. Juniors Rebecca Blitz and Taylor Uden have hit .500 in those contests with three of Uden's six homers coming at Andy Mohr Field.
• IU has six in the starting lineup who have been hitting .400 or better at home.
SEEING DOUBLE
• The Hoosiers now have 55 doubles on the season, which is tied for second in the Big Ten.
• Indiana's out-doubling its opponents 55-45 this year.
• The Hoosiers finished the 2016 campaign with 69 doubles, which was fourth all-time in program history.
• Uden leads the way with nine doubles, while O'Malley and junior Aimilia McDonough have each knocked seven.
• The Hoosiers have six players on the roster who have doubled at least six times this season.
OFFENSIVE NOTES
• IU has knocked 21 home runs this season, led by seven from Tsirigos and six from Uden. Tsirigos has tied her career high from a year ago, while Uden's previous best was five. Tsirigos currently has 24 career home runs, tied for seventh most in a career at Indiana.
• Last season, the Hoosiers finished the season with 26 homers.
• Indiana's 113 walks this year is tied for fourth in the Big Ten. Tsirigos leads the team with 20, while freshman Katie Lacefield has 19. Tsirigos' 100 career walks is third all time at IU.
• Speaking of Tsirigos, she is hitting a team-best .524 in Big Ten play, which is third in the conference. In those nine games, she has 11 hits, 14 RBI, six runs and five homers.
TRAINER'S STRIKEOUT RANKINGS
Tara Trainer has 131 strikeouts on the year, good for 36th nationally and third in the Big Ten.
A season ago, the righty, who was named No. 21 on Fastpitch News' Preseason Top 50 NCAA Softball Pitchers List, set the Indiana freshman strikeout record with 183.
