BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball (18-22, 4-7 Big Ten) split Tuesday's doubleheader with Purdue (16-27, 5-6 Big Ten) at Andy Mohr Field. The Hoosiers shut out the Boilermakers in game one, 4-0, before falling late in game two, 2-1.
Indiana 4, Purdue 0
IU's game one win was led by a complete game from sophomore Tara Trainer combined with multi-hit performances by junior Taylor Uden and freshman Katie Lacefield, who also had a career-best three RBI in the victory.
Indiana saw seven different batters register at least one hit, combining for nine compared to Purdue's four.
Lacefield's first RBI came in the first as she drew a bases-loaded walk to plate freshman Gabbi Jenkins, who had reached on a lead-off single.
After Uden started the third off with a single to left center, a walk to senior CaraMia Tsirigos put two on for Lacefield, who again delivered by pushing the ball through the right side, bringing Uden home.
Purdue's biggest offensive threat came in the fourth as the Boilermakers loaded the bases on a trio of walks. Trainer got out of the jam by forcing a fly out to left to leave them loaded.
The Hoosiers added another run in the fifth as junior Rachel O'Malley started a two-out rally with a single to left. She came home on Lacefield's second hit of the night, a double to dead center to make it 3-0.
Indiana's final run came on a sacrifice fly by senior Erin Lehman, plating sophomore Sarah Galovich in the sixth frame.
The complete game in the circle was the 12th of the season for Trainer, who struck out six in the victory.
Purdue 2, Indiana 1
The Boilermakers used a seventh-inning rally to earn the doubleheader split, scoring both runs in the final frame. Redshirt sophomore Emily Kirk pitched all 7.0 innings, surrendering just one earned run in the game, which was her second complete outing of the season.
Purdue pitcher Katie Johnson also tossed a complete game and helped her own cause at the plate by bringing in both Boilermaker runs.
Jenkins turned in a 4-for-4 performance, tying her career best. Jenkins was responsible for four of Indiana's six hits, with the others coming from Uden and Blitz.
The game remained a stalemate until the Hoosiers broke through in the sixth, plating the first run of the contest as Uden singled to second base to bring in Blitz. IU threatened to add more by loading the bases with no outs, however a double play and groundout limited to the damage to just one run.
In the game's final inning, a pair of Purdue singles by Alexa Binkes and Stephanie Ramsey combined with a Hoosier throwing error on a dropped third strike loaded the bags. Johnson then singled through the left side to give Purdue a 2-1 lead.
Jenkins looked to get a rally started in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out single up the middle, but a lineout back to Johnson ended the game.
Up next, the Hoosiers hit the road for their third-straight weekend Big Ten series. IU will face No. 25 Ohio State in Columbus with the first game slated for Friday at 6 p.m.
