LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Three athletes took to the ring for the hammer throw competition at the Louisville Invitational. Day one of the meet opened up with just the one event. The bulk of the action will be held tomorrow from Cardinal Park off the campus of the University of Louisville.
In the women's hammer throw, Nakel McClinton secured the victory on just her second throw of the afternoon. Her first throw traveled 59.49m, which put her in second after the first round. In the second round, she uncorked a throw of 61.65m (202-3) to take the lead. After aggressively fouling her next two throws, McClinton found grass on her final two throws, but was unable to improve her mark. Her second round throw proved far enough to earn the win by over a foot.
Nycia Ford finished fifth in the event. She found herself in sixth after the first round with a throw of 52.72m. Following the lead of her teammate, Ford's second round throw was her best effort of the day. Her heave of 55.85m (183-3) moved her into fifth place for the meet. Her mark set a new personal best and moved her up a couple of spots in the Hoosier record book. She now ranks fourth, behind McClinton, Laura Schroeder and Faith Sherrill.
On the men's side, Andrew Miller finished second in the hammer throw. After getting on the board in the first throw with a mark of 59.42m, Miller fouled his next two throws. He made it into the finals with that mark, and entered seeded third. His fourth throw led to a small improvement before launching his fifth throw. His mark of 62.72m (205-9) was the best mark he hit and was good enough to net him a second-place finish.
The final day of the Louisville Invitational will get underway bright and early tomorrow morning. Field events will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will be followed by the start of the track events at noon. Live results for all of tomorrow's action can be tracked here or via the Indiana track and field Twitter account.
