BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the second consecutive year, the Indiana University track and field team has partnered with the College Mentors for Kids program. The program is a student-driven mentoring program for elementary age students. The after school mentoring program pairs a college student with an elementary student. The tandem hits a variety of places around Bloomington, allowing the young student to experience the town in ways they normally would not be able to.
Last week, the Hoosier track and field team hosted a large group of the students at the Robert C. Haugh Complex. IU's athletes taught the kids the basic skills required for several events. The kids learned the proper form of the shot put, the correct way to long jump, how to handle the hurdles and the quickest way to exchange the baton in a relay event.
At the conclusion of the hour long practice, the kids were able to ask the athletes questions. Within the question and answer session, IU's track and field team was able to speak about the importance of particular life skills, such as: time-management, teamwork and work ethic.
The track and field team will be back in action this weekend as they travel north to battle Purdue. The outdoor season is quickly coming to a close with just three regular season meets remaining. The Big Ten Championships, hosted by Penn State, are less than one month away.
