IU Hosts Maryland This Weekend

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Softball (19-25, 5-9 Big Ten) resumes its four game homestand this weekend as the Hoosiers play host to Maryland (9-30-1, 2-10 Big Ten) at Andy Mohr Field. Due to the weather forecast, the teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at 1 and 3 p.m. with the final game of the series coming Sunday at 1 p.m.
Admission to all Indiana Softball games is free of charge.
WEEKEND PROMOS
Fans are invited to bring their dogs to Friday's doubleheader as part of Bark in the Park. On Sunday, there will be a free post-game clinic.
SCOUTING MARYLAND
Maryland has picked a pair of Big Ten wins this season, a 5-4 victory against Northwestern and a 2-1 win against No. 18 Michigan last weekend. The Terrapins' most impressive win of the season came on Feb. 18 as Maryland defeated No. 1 Florida, 4-2 in the Aquafina Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
Maryland is batting .269 as a team, led by Anna Kufta's .314 average with 37 hits, 20 runs and 17 RBI. Juli Strange has also been strong offensively, batting .309 with 34 hits, 25 runs and seven RBI.
The Terrapins' team ERA stands at 5.10 for the year. Madison Martin (3.79 ERA, 6-11, 125.2 IP) and Hannah Dewey (5.25 ERA, 3-12, 90.2 IP) have logged the most innings in 2017.
Since Maryland joined the Big Ten, the Hoosiers and Terrapins have each taken a series. In 2015, Maryland won two of three in Bloomington. Last season, Indiana took the first two games in College Park to win the series.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana hosted No. 20 Kentucky on Wednesday, falling to the Wildcats, 6-2. The Hoosiers controlled much of the game but Kentucky plated five answered runs in the final two frames to win the game.
The Hoosiers traveled to Columbus over the weekend to face No. 25 Ohio State. Indiana came away with a 3-1 victory in game two, marking the first win against a ranked opponent since 2013. However, Ohio State secured the series with an 8-2 win on Sunday.
THAT'S A (NON-CONFERENCE) WRAP
• Wednesday's game against the Wildcats marked the final non-conference game of the regular season for the Hoosiers.
• IU registered a 14-16 record in non-conference action
• Aimilia McDonough led the Indiana bats with a .389 average in non-conference, knocking 21 hits with 14 runs.
• Highlights from Indiana's non-conference schedule include:
- Freshman Emily Goodin tossed her first career no-hitter against UAB on Feb. 24. Indiana won the game, 7-0. Goodin earned a pair of Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolades during non-conference action
-The Hoosiers posted a 4-1 record in the Samford/UAB Tournament and a perfect 5-0 mark in the Memphis Softball Tournament
-IU opened home play in the Hoosier Classic, going 3-1 with a pair of wins against Bowling Green and a victory against UIC
DEFENSE CONTINUES TO BE STRONG
• IU is second in the Big Ten with its .966 fielding percentage, including a .979 mark in conference action. Last season, the Hoosiers finished with a .958 fielding percentage.
TSIRIGOS MAKING HER MARK IN THE RECORD BOOKS
• Senior CaraMia. Tsirigos knocked a two-run homer during Sunday's series finale at Ohio State, bringing her season total to eight, a new career high and most on the team.
• Tsirigos' 25 career home runs is tied for fifth-most in program history.
• Tsirigos also leads the team in walks with 29 and has 109 in her career, which is third in the Indiana record books. She is just two away from being tied for second in the team's history.
• In Big Ten action, Tsirigos is hitting .469 with 17 RBI, 15 hits, 13 walks, 7 runs and 6 homers.
OFFENSIVE NOTES
• IU has knocked 22 home runs this season, led by eight from Tsirigos and six from Uden. Last season, the Hoosiers finished the year with 26 homers.
• Indiana's 140 walks this year is fourth in the Big Ten. Tsirigos leads the team with 29, which ranks 52nd in the country and third in the Big Ten, while freshman Katie Lacefield has 22.
• Indiana now has 60 doubles on the year, which is third in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers finished the 2016 campaign with 69 doubles, which was fourth all-time in program history.
• IU is out-doubling its opponents, 60-54
• Indiana's 1.37 doubles per game average is 62nd in the country.
• Junior Taylor Uden has 10 doubles, which ties her career high she set during her freshman campaign. Lehman and juniors Rachel O'Malley and AImilia McDonough each have seven on the year.
• Junior Rebecca Blitz has 14 stolen bases on the year, good for fifth in the Big Ten. Blitz had four stolen bases during IU's series at Ohio State. For her career, she has 58 which is now fifth in Indiana program history.
