Hammer Throwers Kickoff Rankin/Poehlein Invitational
4/21/2017 6:19:00 PM | Track and Field
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – An abbreviated day one of the Rankin/Poehlein Invitational is in the books. Andrew Miller took home a wire-to-wire victory in the hammer throw, while Nycia Ford topped her previous career best mark.
Andrew Miller established his dominance on the very first throw of the evening. He was the first competitor to throw in the men's hammer throw, and on his first attempt he hit a mark of 62.50m (205-1). That mark would have won the event, but he continued to improve his mark. His second throw traveled 63.05m (206-10) giving him nearly a 25-foot lead. His best throw was his fourth, a mark of 63.06m (206-11), which was more than enough to win the event.
Willie Morrison finished fourth in the event with a mark of 50.31m (165-0). Morrison will be the favorite to win the shot put tomorrow and should place highly in the discus as well.
On the women's side, Nakel McClinton finished fourth with a throw of 58.36m (191-6). She hit that mark on her second throw of the evening. She saw herself in second place after her second throw, but fell behind two Boilermakers in the fourth round of throws.
Nycia Ford established a new personal best for the second consecutive weekend in the event. She hit a mark of 55.85m (183-3) at the Louisville Invitational last weekend. After that breakthrough, she made two throws that traveled further than her previous PR today. Her fourth throw was her best, hitting 56.76m (186-3), topping her previous best effort by three feet. Ford's mark keeps her fourth on the school's all-time leaderboard.
Tomorrow's slate will be loaded with track and field events beginning at 11:00 a.m. with the javelin throw. The track events will begin just before 2:00 p.m. with the men's steeplechase. Again, the live results can be tracked here or via the IU track and field Twitter page.
