4/22/2017 5:31:00 PM | Track and Field
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – On a breezy, chilly day at the Rankin Track on the campus of Purdue University, the Hoosier track and field team won 12 events. The meet featured a matchup of in-state rivals as Indiana squared off against Purdue and Wabash.
Willie Morrison battled some windy conditions to break his school record in the shot put. His previous mark lasted just two weeks. His mark of 19.55m (64-1.75) was also good enough to win the meet. His second throw of the day was just two centimeters shy of his school record. He launched his fourth throw over 64 feet to establish the new record.
On the women's side, Khayla Dawson was victorious in the shot put with a mark of 15.36m (50-4.75). David Schall was the runner-up in the men's discus throw with a mark of 52.67m (172-10).
Running unattached, Ben Veatch won the mile run at the Jesse Owens Track Classic in Columbus, Ohio. Veatch ran a mark of 4:05.32, a time that would rank inside the top 10 in the NCAA if he were not redshirting this season. Ben won the race by nearly five seconds and topped the second place finisher by over 11 seconds.
IU's distance runners also competed well in West Lafayette. Olivia Hippensteel captured first in the 1,500m run with a time of 4:28.43. Maggie Allen was the runner-up in the event, followed by Corinne Cominator in third. The men's side saw similar success, sweeping the top three spots. Kyle Mau was first to cross with a time of 3:49.51. Kyle DuVall, 3:58.72, was second and Kyle Burks, 3:59.42, finished third.
Joe Murphy and Jason Crist dominated the 3k steeplechase. Crist led the majority of the race, following the rabbiting of Jeremy Coughler. Murphy passed him in the final lap, finishing first with a time of 8:57.33. Crist was second with a time of 8:58.76.42.
The Hoosiers also swept the men's 800m run, claiming the top three spots. Cooper Williams, running in his hometown, made a late surge in the last 200 meters to win with a time of 1:52.64. Teammates Jordan Huntoon and Adam Wallace finished just behind Williams, taking second and third, respectively.
Chanli Mundy won the 3,000m run. She ran a strategic race, sitting on the leader for most of the seven and a half lap race. On the backstretch of the final lap, she took the lead and would not look back. Her winning time was 9:57.35, the only runner to run sub-10 minutes in the event.
Freshman Jenna Jungels earned her first collegiate outdoor meet victory in the long jump. Her career best mark of 6.04m (19-9.75) was the best mark by over six inches. Sydney Clute was the pole vault winner again, this week clearing 4.10m (13-5.25). Rachel Mather was second in the event.
