STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Indiana women's tennis team wanted to close the regular season on a high note and controlled much of the match on the way to a 6-1 victory over Penn State on Sunday.

The Hoosiers (13-13, 4-7) put pressure on the Nittany Lions from the beginning of the match. After Paula Gutierrez and Natalie Whalen claimed a 6-4 win in doubles, Madison Appel and Kim Schmider put the doubles point in the Hoosiers column with a 7-5 win.

Penn State scored the first singles point, to even the match 1-1, but then it was the Hoosiers the rest of the way.

Appel, Schmider, Whalen and Gutierrez won in straight sets for the Hoosiers and Caitlin Bernard grinded out a three-set win to give the Hoosiers the 6-1 win.

"I'm really proud of our team today," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "This was an important match for us and we came in with an aggressive and attacking mentality from the beginning."

Up next the Hoosiers will get ready for the Big Ten Tournament, which starts Thursday April 27 in Champaign, Ill.
