BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics honored its student-athletes at the seventh-annual Spirit of Indiana Showcase on Monday, April 24, at the Indiana University Auditorium.
The Showcase honored student-athletes with year-end awards from 2016 and 2017. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Spirit of Indiana Director's Award, given by Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass to two student-athletes that best represent The Spirit of Indiana: 24 Sports, 1 Team.
This year's honorees are Sydney Clute (Track and Field) and Rashard Fant (Football).
Clute was the 2016 Indoor and Outdoor Big Ten Champion in the Pole Vault and a 2016 Outdoor First Team All-American. In 2017, Clute currently has the best collegiate mark in the nation and top in the Big Ten. Clute is the SAAC President this year and is currently working towards a master's degree.
"I'm very honored and humbled with this award," Clute said. "I would like to thank the athletic department staff and my coaches and teammates. I will forever be a Hoosier."
"In my many years of coaching I have not worked with a more complete student-athlete," IU head coach Ron Helmer said. "Sydney is unassuming but is involved in many areas that enhance but take time from her academic and athletic responsibilities. She cares about her team and those on it but never at the expense of making sure she is doing her part, not just leading but performing at the highest level."
A second team All-Big Ten selection in 2016, Fant's 17 pass breakups led the conference and tied for second nationally, while his 20 passes defended paced the B1G and ranked third in the country. Fant is first in the NCAA among active players with 48 career passes defended, averaging 1.3 per game in 38 career contests. The Atlanta native's three interceptions, tied for 12th in the Big Ten last season. He made 33 tackles, 29 solo. Fant graduated with a degree in SPEA Management in 2016.
"Thank you to my coaches and my teammates for letting me be me," Fant said. "It is great to celebrate the achievements of everyone tonight."
The department also recognized the Big Ten Medal of Honor recipients. The award is given to a person who strives for excellence in both athletics and academics.
The Big Ten, the nation's oldest collegiate conference, commemorates the 102nd anniversary of a very unique tradition - the Big Ten Medal of Honor. The conference's most exclusive award was the first of its kind in intercollegiate athletics to recognize academic and athletic excellence. The Big Ten Medal of Honor was first awarded in 1915 to one student-athlete from the graduating class of each university who had "attained the greatest proficiency in athletics and scholastic work." Big Ten schools currently feature almost 9,500 student-athletes, but only 28 earn this prestigious award on an annual basis. In the 101 years of the Medal of Honor, almost 1,400 student-athletes have earned this distinction.
The women's honoree this year is CaraMia Tsirigos (Softball) and the men's honoree Derek Creviston (Men's Soccer).
As Indiana's designated player, Tsirigos leads the team in home runs with eight this season and has knocked 25 home runs in her career, which is tied for fifth all-time at Indiana. She is currently batting .305, a career best for the senior. Her 111 career walks is tied for second all-time in program history. Tsirigos has played in 174 games in a Hoosier uniform, with 174 starts.
Off the field, Tsirigos is an Executive Board Member for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which works to act as a liaison between athletes and the athletic department. She has also been greatly involved in the Hoosier Heroes Leadership and Emerging Leaders programs. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, she was also named a 2016 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. Tsirigos will graduate with a major in Sport Marketing and Management and a minor in the Kelley School of Business.
Derek Creviston was a leader on and off the pitch for the Hoosiers, earning the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree this past season. For his career, Creviston appeared in 59 matches for Indiana, earning 57 starts. The Atlanta, Ga. native was a stalwart on the Hoosiers' backline during his time playing for the Cream & Crimson, but also totaled one goal and one assist during his junior season. Creviston was also a standout in the classroom, earning three Academic All-Big Ten honors.
